EN 4880:2026 is a CEN European Standard for aerospace standard parts. It sets minimum requirements for qualification, acceptance, delivery and inspection, and it is intended for the aerospace industry, manufacturers and customers working from a product standard or, when invoked, from delivery terms.

What does EN 4880:2026 specify?

EN 4880:2026 applies to standard parts and their assemblies when a product standard refers to it. It can also be applied to other parts when the terms of delivery invoke it. Where a product standard sets different requirements, those product-specific requirements take precedence.

The document is organized into six clauses: Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Requirements, Qualifications and quality assurance provisions, and Conditions on delivery. It ends with a bibliography.

What are the key requirements of EN 4880:2026?

• Clause 4.1, production engineering - The manufacturing sealed route shall be defined and made available to the customer on request. It must describe the sequence of operations, including processes, pre-treatments, finishes and quality assurance requirements. In practice, this gives the buyer visibility on how the part is made and controls changes to that route.

• Clause 4.2, materials - Materials shall match the product standard, unless the manufacturer introduces other materials and proves compliance. For assemblies, each part’s materials shall be identified and provided on request. Any material change needs customer approval before the next delivery. This matters because material control affects performance, traceability and approval of substitutions.

• Clauses 4.3 to 4.5, performance, workmanship and interchangeability - Standard parts shall meet the product standard’s performance requirements, and any deviation from the product standard or EN 4880:2026 is a reason for rejecting that delivery. Parts with the same manufacturer part number shall be directly interchangeable, and dimensions, tolerances and relevant physical or chemical characteristics shall not be changed. This protects fit, function and replacement compatibility.

• Clauses 4.6 and 4.7, marking and protective treatment - Parts and assemblies shall be marked to the product standard, or at minimum to EN 2424, style G when marking is not specified there. Marking shall be clear and legible. Protective treatment and surface finish shall meet the product standard. This supports identification, traceability and durability in service.

• Clauses 4.8 and 4.9, acceptance documentation and test conditions - Each delivery shall include an acceptance test report in accordance with EN 10204 type 2.1, covering conformity and acceptance test results. Unless otherwise specified, measurements and tests shall be made under defined standard ambient conditions. This gives the customer documented evidence at delivery and a common test environment.

• Clause 5, qualifications and quality assurance - The manufacturer’s quality management system shall be aerospace-accepted, for example EN 9100 or equivalent. Inspection responsibility normally rests with the manufacturer, but the customer may perform counter-acceptance tests. Inspection is grouped into qualification test, First Article Inspection and conformance/acceptance test. This structure separates design or process approval from routine lot release.

• Clause 6, delivery conditions - Packaging shall protect parts from humidity, corrosion, impact, contamination and other damaging influences. Packages shall be marked with the standard part designation, manufacturer details, order number, production lot number and gross weight; shelf-life controlled materials also need quarter and year of manufacture. This helps logistics, storage control and receiving inspection.

What terms does EN 4880:2026 define?

• Production lot - A batch of finished standard parts made under the same process and material conditions, with the same defining document and key characteristics.
• Qualification test - A test or series of tests used to show that a standard product complies with the applicable product standards and technical specifications.
• Acceptance test - A manufacturer-run test or series of tests used to decide whether a production lot meets its acceptance criteria.
• Manufacturing sealed route - The defined production sequence, including processes, pre-treatments, finishes and quality assurance steps.
• First Article Inspection - The inspection applied to initially manufactured parts, components, sub-assemblies, assemblies and the first complete production lot.
• Product standard - The product-specific standard that defines the part and can set requirements that override this general specification.

Who uses EN 4880:2026?

EN 4880:2026 is used by aerospace manufacturers, their customers, quality assurance teams, inspection staff and certification authorities or their appointed representatives. It is relevant when approving a manufacturer, qualifying a part, checking first production output, testing acceptance lots and preparing delivery documentation.

What changed in EN 4880:2026 from the previous edition?

EN 4880:2026 supersedes EN 4880:2023. The stated technical changes are:

• normative references were updated;
• Clause 3 was editorially revised;
• Clause 4.7 was renamed from “Protective finish” to “Protective treatment and surface finish”;
• Clause 4.8 changed its reference from ISO 16228 to EN 10204.

Which standards are used with EN 4880:2026?

• EN 2424 - provides the marking style to use when the product standard does not specify marking.
• EN 9130:2020 - provides the record retention reference used for the First Article Inspection report.
• EN 10204 - provides the inspection document type used for the acceptance test report.
• EN 9100 - is given as an example of an aerospace-accepted quality management system for manufacturers.

What does the EN 4880:2026 document contain?

EN 4880:2026 contains requirements for production engineering, materials, performance, workmanship, interchangeability, marking, protective treatment, acceptance documentation and test conditions. It also sets out manufacturer approval, inspection responsibility, qualification testing, First Article Inspection and conformance/acceptance testing. The delivery clause covers packaging and package marking so parts can be received, stored and handled without damage.
