Overview

EN 15146:2026 is a European standard developed by CEN specifying the characteristics of solid softwood panelling and cladding with machined profiles that do not include tongue and groove. This standard applies to panels and cladding elements manufactured from softwoods-gymnosperms-that are intended for both interior and exterior applications. The document covers a variety of product types, including those that are untreated, surface treated, treated, thermally or chemically modified, and finger-jointed. EN 15146:2026 does not address treatment or surface coating processes themselves; instead, it focuses on product attributes and classification at the time of production. For additional regulatory requirements such as durability, fire reaction, dangerous substances, and CE-marking under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), reference to EN 14915 is required.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope: Solid wood panelling and cladding made from softwoods, without tongue and groove profiles, intended for use in a range of environments.
  • Grading Classes: Specification of grading systems for softwoods, including special consideration for species such as maritime pine. Classes include Grade A, Grade B, and trade-specific designations.
  • Moisture Content: Defines acceptable moisture content ranges at the time of production, crucial for product stability and performance.
  • Dimensional Tolerances: Establishes minimum thickness, width, and length, as well as tolerances for geometrical characteristics to ensure consistency and fit.
  • Surface Machining: Requirements for surface finish, whether planed, rough sawn, brushed, sandblasted, or sanded.
  • Marking and Technical Specifications: Outlines the mandatory information to be provided on products, packaging, or accompanying documentation.

Applications

EN 15146:2026 provides practical value for multiple stakeholders in the timber industry:

  • Manufacturers benefit from clear, harmonized requirements for product characteristics, facilitating quality assurance and streamlined production processes. The standard supports the production of both traditional and modified softwood cladding and panelling for a wide variety of end uses.
  • Architects and Designers have reliable criteria for specifying solid wood panelling and cladding solutions for interior wall finishes, exterior facades, and decorative features, ensuring standardized dimensional stability, visual appearance, and suitability for the intended application.
  • Builders and Contractors can ensure compliance, quality, and proper installation by referencing the prescribed grading, moisture content, and surface machining specifications. The absence of tongue and groove profiles offers flexible installation possibilities for various architectural concepts.
  • Suppliers and Distributors are supported with clear product information and marking requirements, promoting transparency and traceability across international supply chains.
  • Specifiers and Regulators can refer to EN 15146:2026 for defining procurement requirements for softwood panelling and cladding in both renovation and new construction projects.

Related Standards

For comprehensive conformity and to address additional requirements such as durability, fire performance, and hazardous substances, professionals should consult these related standards:

  • EN 14915: Solid wood panelling and cladding - Characteristics, requirements, and marking (especially relevant for regulatory compliance and CE-marking).
  • EN 1309-1, EN 1309-3: Methods for measuring dimensions and assessing biological degradations in round and sawn timber.
  • EN 13183-1, EN 13183-2, EN 13183-3: Determination of moisture content by oven dry, electrical resistance, and capacitance methods.
  • EN 13647: Determination of geometrical characteristics for wood flooring, panelling, and cladding.
  • EN 13307-1: Requirements for finger-jointed timber profiles.
  • EN 13556: Nomenclature of timbers used in Europe.
  • CEN/TS 12169: Conformity assessment for lots of sawn timber.

These references ensure that EN 15146:2026 aligns with broader industry practices and regulatory frameworks.

By adhering to EN 15146:2026, stakeholders can drive quality, safety, and market consistency in the use of solid softwood panelling and cladding without tongue and groove, across both interior and exterior applications.

5 Requirements
5.1 General
The softwood species shall be selected with regard to the appearance expected, the suitability for the
intended purpose and the general characteristics of the species itself. All requirements apply at the time
of production unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
Finger jointing according to EN 13307-1 is permitted if agreed upon and specified by the manufacturer.
NOTE Regarding the bonding and glue type other standards and regulations can apply.

5.2 Grading
5.2.1 General
Grading applies to the face only, unless otherwise specified. Machining requirements are covered in 5.4.4
and apply to all grades of all species.
The measurement of features shall be in accordance with EN 1309-3.
The elements may be finished with surface coating. The grading shall be done before coating.
Additionally, to the grading classes given in 5.2.2 different grading classes and quality criteria for
panelling and cladding exist on national and company levels in Europe. Hence, free grades according to
5.2.3 may also be used.
5.2.2 Grading classes
Grading and the features for softwoods (except maritime pine) are given in Table 1. Grading and the
features for maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) are given in Table 2.
A combined grading class, e.g. A/B, is permitted if agreed upon and specified by the manufacturer.
