Liming materials - Determination of size distribution by dry and wet sieving

This European Standard specifies two methods for the determination of the particle size distribution of liming materials.
The dry sieving method (method A) is applicable to all liming materials except wet and paste-like products.
Method A is not applicable, if blinding, caking, electrostatic charges or agglomeration occur after pre drying.
The wet sieving method (method B) is applicable to products which are susceptible to blinding, caking, electrostatic charges or agglomeration after pre drying.
Method B can be used to determine the primary particle size distribution of granulated products.
Method B is not applicable to burnt lime and liming materials containing water-soluble constituents.

Sredstva za apnjenje - Določevanje porazdelitve velikosti delcev s suhim in mokrim sejanjem

Overview

EN 12948:2010 is a CEN European Standard for determining the particle size distribution of liming materials using two laboratory sieving methods: dry sieving (Method A) and wet sieving (Method B). The standard defines scope, principle, apparatus, sample preparation, test procedure, expression of results, precision data from inter‑laboratory trials, and reporting requirements. Results are expressed on a dry‑matter basis and the document supersedes EN 12948:2002.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope & applicability
    • Method A (dry sieving): suitable for most liming materials except wet or paste‑like products. Not applicable if blinding, caking, electrostatic charging or agglomeration occur after pre‑drying.
    • Method B (wet sieving): used for materials prone to blinding/caking or for determining the primary particle size of granulated products. Not applicable to burnt lime or products containing water‑soluble constituents.
  • Principles
    • Method A: dry sieving by hand or mechanical shaker.
    • Method B: wet sieving, with dispersion under continuous water spray when necessary, followed by drying of retained fractions.
  • Apparatus & conditions
    • Test sieves conforming to ISO 3310-1 (wire cloth) or perforated plates (granular products), mechanical shaker, balance (0.01 g), oven at (105 ± 2) °C, stopwatch, soft brush.
    • Select up to seven sieve sizes from ISO 565 nominal sizes to cover expected particle range.
  • Sample preparation & moisture
    • Sampling itself is not part of the standard; sample prep follows EN 1482-2 and moisture determination uses EN 12048.
  • Precision
    • Inter‑laboratory data (1999): for fineness < 1 mm
      • Method A: repeatability r = 6.50%, reproducibility R = 13.90%
      • Method B: repeatability r = 7.64%, reproducibility R = 13.10%
  • Reporting
    • Test report must identify the sample, reference the standard, state the method and sieve type, present results (dry basis), and note any deviations or observations.

Applications and users

  • Quality control and conformity testing for manufacturers of liming materials, lime and dolomite products and suppliers of agricultural amendments.
  • Analytical and QC laboratories performing particle size distribution testing for fertilizer and soil‑improving materials.
  • Regulatory bodies, certification agencies and research groups requiring standardized, comparable size distribution data for agronomic performance, dissolution behavior and application suitability.
