Overview
EN ISO 9093:2021 specifies requirements for seacocks, through-hull fittings, hose connections, related fittings, and their installation in small craft up to 24 meters in length, as defined in ISO 8666:2020. The standard is applicable to components used for transferring liquids or gases through the hulls of small boats and is essential for ensuring safety, watertight integrity, and durability in marine environments. It does not apply to engine, heater exhaust fittings, or sail drive through-hull fittings.
Established by CEN, this European and international standard is harmonized to support compliance with the EU Recreational Craft Directive (2013/53/EU). The document consolidates prior editions into a single comprehensive standard and introduces updated requirements for material performance, strength, and environmental resistance.
Key Topics
Scope and Definitions
- Applies to through-hull fittings, seacocks, and hose connections on small craft.
- Excludes engine and heater exhaust, and sail drive fittings.
Material Requirements
- All fittings below the waterline must be corrosion-resistant.
- Brass components must be dezincification-resistant (DZR).
- Non-metallic parts require UV stabilization and resistance to oxidation.
- Combinations of materials must consider galvanic corrosion risks.
Design and Strength
- Detailed requirements for thread identification, sizing, and flange dimensions.
- Fittings must be watertight, securely attached, and able to withstand external forces.
- Minimum wall thickness and threading ensure mechanical performance.
- Seacocks must be operable throughout expected temperature ranges.
Installation
- Proper installation secures fittings and maintains hull integrity, especially in reinforced plastic hulls.
- Seacocks must be accessible for inspection and operation.
- Correct use of clamps, fasteners, and bedding compounds is required.
Testing and Maintenance
- Components are subject to strength, corrosion resistance, and UV resistance tests.
- Owner’s manual should include fitting locations, operation, maintenance, and safety instructions.
Applications
EN ISO 9093:2021 is crucial for:
- Boat builders and manufacturers: Ensuring that seacocks and through-hull fittings meet technical and regulatory requirements for safety and durability.
- Marine equipment suppliers: Guaranteeing conformity for fittings sold for use in small craft.
- Boat owners and operators: Understanding the maintenance and operational requirements for safe use.
- Surveyors and inspectors: Assessing compliance during construction and periodic inspections.
Typical applications include:
- Installing or replacing seacocks or drainage fittings in yachts, motorboats, and recreational watercraft.
- Providing specifications for new builds or refits to ensure water ingress prevention.
- Ensuring continued safe operation with regular inspections and adherence to maintenance guidelines.
Related Standards
- ISO 8666:2020 – Defines principal data, including hull length for small craft applicability.
- ISO 12215-6:2008 – Covers structural arrangements and details for hull construction.
- ISO 4892-3:2016 – Methods for UV exposure testing of plastics.
- ISO 6509-1:2014 & ISO 6509-2:2017 – Determination and assessment of dezincification resistance in copper alloys.
- ISO 14993:2018 – Corrosion resistance testing for metals and alloys in salt mist conditions.
By adhering to EN ISO 9093:2021, stakeholders ensure compliance with EU regulations, improve craft safety, and enhance product reliability and customer confidence in marine installations.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
