Overview

EN ISO 9093:2021 (ISO 9093:2020) - "Small craft - Seacocks and through-hull fittings" specifies requirements for through‑hull fittings, seacocks, hose connections and their installation on small craft with a hull length (LH) up to 24 m (per ISO 8666:2020). It consolidates earlier parts into a single document and is adopted as a European Standard by CEN. The standard excludes engine/heater exhaust fittings and sail‑drive through‑hull fittings.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard addresses design, materials, testing and installation aspects important for safe and durable seawater fittings:

  • Material requirements: allowable materials and acceptable material combinations, resistance to deterioration and corrosion.
  • Mechanical strength: strength requirements and an installed strength test (Annex A).
  • Corrosion resistance: laboratory corrosion testing (Annex B) and dezincification considerations for copper alloys.
  • UV stability: UV stabilisation testing for polymer components (Annex C).
  • Through‑hull and seacock design: thread identification, stem and flange dimensions, finishes and thread‑length requirements for seacocks.
  • Hose fittings and connections: design and hose‑connection requirements to ensure leak‑tight, durable connections.
  • Installation: hull reinforcements, installation requirements, device installation information and Owner’s Manual content.
  • Operating conditions: specified range of operating and storage temperatures and related test treatments.

Referenced normative documents include ISO 8666 (hull length definition), ISO 4892‑3, ISO 6509‑1/2 and ISO 14993.

Practical applications

EN ISO 9093:2021 is used to ensure that seacocks and through‑hull fittings meet safety, reliability and regulatory expectations:

  • Selection and specification of fittings for new small craft (≤ 24 m)
  • Design validation and quality control for marine equipment manufacturers
  • Installation guidance for shipyards, boat builders and refitters
  • Test protocols for component qualification (strength, corrosion, UV)
  • Documentation requirements for owners (manuals) and for conformity assessment

Complying with EN ISO 9093 helps demonstrate conformity with EU Directive 2013/53/EU essential requirements where applicable.

Who should use this standard

  • Marine equipment manufacturers and suppliers (seacocks, fittings, hoses)
  • Yacht and small craft builders and naval architects
  • Marine surveyors, certifiers and classification societies
  • Maintenance yards, refit specialists and installers
  • Regulatory bodies and procurement teams specifying safety standards

Related standards

  • ISO 8666 - Small craft principal data (hull length)
  • ISO 4892‑3 - UV testing of plastics
  • ISO 6509‑1 / ISO 6509‑2 - Dezincification tests for copper alloys
  • ISO 14993 - Accelerated cyclic corrosion testing
  • EU Directive 2013/53/EU - Recreational craft safety requirements

Keywords: EN ISO 9093, ISO 9093, seacocks, through‑hull fittings, small craft fittings, marine corrosion testing, seacock installation, hose fittings.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
