Overview

EN 14016-1:2004 - published by CEN - sets the definitions and mandatory requirements for binders used in magnesite screeds: specifically caustic magnesia (MgO) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2). The standard applies to materials used for magnesite screed material and magnesite screeds as referenced in EN 13813. It defines compositional limits, physical and mechanical properties, reaction-to-fire provisions and the conformity assessment route for manufacturers and suppliers.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard specifies required characteristics and test/assessment arrangements for binders for magnesite screeds, including:

  • Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) - compositional requirements for trade forms:
    • Aqueous solutions: MgCl2 mass ≥ 20% and strict limits on impurities (e.g. low water-insolubles, NaCl/KCl, MgSO4, CaCl2).
    • Solid salt: MgCl2 mass ≥ 46% with specified maximum levels for water-insoluble and water-soluble impurities.
  • Caustic magnesia (MgO) - chemical and physical limits:
    • MgO ≥ 80% by mass
    • Hydrochloric-acid-insoluble residues + sesquioxides ≤ 14% by mass
    • CaO ≤ 4% by mass (higher total CaO allowed if free CaO ≤ 1%)
    • Ignition loss ≤ 8% by mass
    • Loose bulk density ≤ 1 000 kg/m3
    • Fineness and grind limits (reference to EN 14016-2 for test method)
  • Setting time - magnesia paste must start setting not before 30 minutes and finish setting no later than 5 hours after mixing.
  • Mechanical strength - reference magnesia test mortar strengths (EN 196-1 procedures):
    • Typical values: 28-day flexural ≥ 9 N/mm2 and compressive ≥ 60 N/mm2 (3-day values typically ~8 and ~50 respectively).
  • Reaction to fire - binders with ≤ 1% organic content (by mass or volume) are classified A1fl (no testing required); other materials must be classified per EN 13501-1.
  • Conformity & quality control - manufacturer obligations: Initial Type Testing (ITT), Factory Production Control (FPC), statistical conformity criteria, marking and labelling requirements.

Applications and users

This standard is intended for:

  • Manufacturer and quality managers of magnesite binders
  • Screed material producers and floor screed contractors using magnesite systems
  • Specifiers, architects and consultants who select materials for in-situ floor screeds
  • Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
  • Procurement officers and regulators verifying compliance and CE marking

EN 14016-1 helps ensure consistent binder quality, predictable setting and strength performance, and compliance with fire-safety classification and CE marking rules.
