Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 36: Determination of the thickness of bituminous pavement
This document describes two test methods for determining the thickness of bituminous pavement. The first method describes measurements carried out on one or more cores which have been drilled from the full depth of the slab or road structure (destructive method). The second method electro-magnetic (non-destructive) measurement are used.
Bitumenske zmesi - Preskusne metode - 36. del: Ugotavljanje debeline bitumenskega vozišča

Overview
EN 12697-36:2022 (CEN) defines standardized test methods for determining the thickness of bituminous pavement. The standard specifies two complementary approaches: a destructive method based on measuring drilled cores, and a non‑destructive electromagnetic method (eddy‑current principle) using an antipole. It supersedes EN 12697-36:2003 and is intended for use in road construction materials testing and pavement quality control.
Key topics and requirements
- Two measurement methods
- Destructive (core-based): Drill full‑depth cores (recommended diameters 100 mm or 150 mm). Measure thickness perpendicular to the upper plane to the nearest 1 mm. Take four evenly spaced measurements around the core diameter and report the average.
- Non‑destructive (electromagnetic): Use an electromagnetic apparatus with an antipole (aluminium foil/sheet) fixed on the road/subgrade. Readings to 1 mm resolution; calibration with calibration rings and at least one destructive check is recommended because aggregate electrical/magnetic properties can affect results.
- Specimen and measurement controls
- Cores must be representative, drilled through the full pavement, axis within 5° of normal, and free from drilling damage. Defective cores must be discarded.
- For multilayer pavements: mark four perpendicular lines, identify layer boundaries, and measure cumulative and individual layer thicknesses.
- If core wall angle >5°, measure relative to vertical with the core top face horizontal.
- Apparatus
- Metal rule or tape and calliper gauge (max permissible error 1 mm); approved jigs; electromagnetic equipment per manufacturer guidance.
- Reporting & precision
- Required report items include sample ID, sampling date/place, method used, average layer thickness (1 mm), deviations, observations and test date.
- Precision: repeatability 1.2 mm (N=10); reproducibility 1.8 mm (N=22).
Applications and users
- Practical uses:
- Quality control during asphalt paving and acceptance testing
- Verification of layer thickness for design conformity and contract compliance
- Rehabilitation planning (mill-and-overlay decisions) and forensic investigations
- On‑site rapid surveys using non‑destructive techniques with spot destructive checks
- Typical users:
- Pavement engineers, materials laboratories, construction contractors, road authorities, inspection bodies, and researchers in road materials and pavement design.
Related standards
- Part of the EN 12697 series (Bituminous mixtures - test methods). Use EN 12697-36 in conjunction with other EN 12697 parts for comprehensive asphalt testing, and follow equipment manufacturer calibration procedures and local CEN-adopted national standards.
