Overview
EN ISO 276:2021 - Binders for paints and varnishes - Linseed stand oil - Requirements and methods of test (ISO 276:2019) - is an internationally recognized standard developed by CEN and ISO for linseed stand oil used as a binder in paints and varnishes. This standard specifies the requirements and corresponding test methods for five distinct types of linseed stand oil, ensuring product quality, consistency, and suitability for various industrial and artistic applications. It replaces the previous edition EN ISO 276:2010, reflecting advances in testing and updated specifications.
Key Topics
- Linseed Stand Oil Types: The standard classifies linseed stand oil into five types based on viscosity, ranging from extra-low to extra-high. This classification allows manufacturers and users to select the appropriate type for specific paint or varnish formulations.
- Performance Requirements:
- Viscosity standards at 20°C, 23°C, and 25°C to ensure correct flow and handling properties.
- Colour (Gardner Scale) to maintain visual consistency in coatings.
- Turbidity Requirements for clarity, with guidance on addressing cold-related turbidity.
- Acid Value limits for chemical stability.
- Saponification Value to confirm polymerization quality.
- Testing Methods: The standard prescribes test methods for each property, referencing widely used ISO procedures such as ISO 12058-1 (viscosity), ISO 4630 (colour), ISO 15715 (turbidity), ISO 660 and ISO 2114 (acid value), and ISO 3657 or ISO 3681 (saponification value).
- Documentation and Reporting: Specifies required details for test reports, supporting traceability and regulatory compliance.
Applications
EN ISO 276:2021 is highly relevant for industries and professionals involved in:
- Paint and Coatings Manufacturing: Ensuring batch-to-batch consistency, optimizing paint performance, and selecting appropriate linseed stand oil for specific formulations.
- Varnish Production: Providing reliable guidelines for varnish formulations, where film formation, drying time, and clarity are critical.
- Quality Assurance and Testing Laboratories: Establishing baseline testing methods and documentation procedures for certifying material quality according to harmonized international standards.
- Art Conservation and Restoration: Supporting the selection of historically accurate binders and materials, benefiting museums and restoration professionals.
- Procurement and Specification Writing: Enabling sourcing departments to specify materials that conform to recognized standards, facilitating clearer contracts and reducing risk.
Related Standards
For comprehensive quality assurance and compatibility, EN ISO 276:2021 references and aligns with several key international standards, including:
- ISO 660 - Determination of acid value in animal and vegetable oils.
- ISO 2114 - Determination of acid value for polyester resin binders in paints.
- ISO 3657 and ISO 3681 - Determination of saponification value in oils and binders.
- ISO 12058-1 - Determination of viscosity in plastics and binder materials.
- ISO 15715 - Turbidity measurement in binder materials.
- ISO 4630 - Colour estimation using the Gardner scale.
- ISO 4618 - Comprehensive terminology for paints and varnishes.
EN ISO 276:2021 offers a harmonized framework to ensure quality, compatibility, and safety in the use of linseed stand oil for paints and varnishes. Adoption of this standard benefits manufacturers, quality professionals, and end users by improving product performance and facilitating international trade in coating materials.
