Overview
EN 14591-4:2007 - Explosion prevention and protection in underground mines - Protective systems - Part 4: Automatic extinguishing systems for roadheaders - specifies requirements for autonomous automatic extinguishing systems fitted to roadheader (selective cut heading) machines. It covers systems that detect the initial phase of a firedamp explosion initiated by a roadheader cutter head and extinguish it at the roadhead so that the roadway drivage team is not put at risk. This part does not cover general fire-fighting at the roadhead. The systems are designed in accordance with Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX).
Key topics and technical requirements
- System scope: Automatic detection and discharge to suppress cutter-head initiated firedamp explosions in roadheader drivages.
- Main components:
- Sensors (e.g., optical UV/radiation detectors) for fast detection of incipient explosions; must tolerate dust, water/mist and construction materials and be validated by a methane-flame functional test.
- Extinguishing agent containers (HRD - High Rate Discharge): discharge speed and total discharge time must be matched to roadhead geometry (distance, roadway cross-section, discharge direction).
- Electronic control and discharge unit: monitors sensors, power, stores system data, supports at least two sensors and a remote interface, and performs automatic test routines.
- Power and emergency supply: must provide automatic changeover and at least 24-hour emergency operation; protected against supply interference.
- Design & safety principles:
- Fail-safe philosophy, high immunity to false triggering and external interference (EMC requirements).
- All electrical equipment to be class M1; minimum degree of protection IP54; designed for ambient −20 °C to +40 °C.
- Mechanical requirements: steel construction meeting EN 10025; vibration resistance to 5 g in 2–20 Hz (per EN 60068-2-6); impact strength 20 J.
- Maintenance-friendly layout with ready access for inspection and replacement.
Applications and users
- Intended for: roadheader manufacturers, mine safety engineers, system integrators, mine operators, procurement/specification teams, conformity assessors and certification bodies responsible for equipment used in potentially explosive underground atmospheres.
- Practical uses: design and specification of extinguishing systems for new or retrofit roadheaders; acceptance testing, commissioning, routine inspection and maintenance planning; demonstrating conformity with ATEX/Directive 94/9/EC for autonomous protective systems.

4 General requirements 4.1 General Automatic explosion extinguishing systems for roadheaders essentially comprise the following co-ordinated components:
sensors for explosion ignition detection; ¾ extinguishing agent containers for explosion fighting; ¾ control system for monitoring the individual components and their combined effect as well as the triggering of the extinguishing system (electronic control and operating unit); ¾ power supply and emergency power supply. The number and configuration of the individual components are determined by the type of machine and by the roadway cross-section to be protected. EN 13463-1 and EN 60079-0 shall be applied. 4.2 Functional requirements 4.2.1 General All components are to be designed for high operating reliability in accordance with the “fail-safe” principle. A high level of protection against incorrect triggering shall be ensured by means of a selective response action and minimum sensitivity to external interference factors. Appropriate protection devices are to be used to protect the components from unauthorized external interventions. If the roadheader has an automatic explosion extinguishing installation, the roadheader shall be equipped with a compulsory interlock. All electrical equipment shall be of class M1. The system is designed for an ambient temperature of – 20 °C to 40 °C. A degree of protection of at least IP 54 is required.
The monitoring range of the detection sensors shall be fixed in such a way that the system only detects those events that have to be controlled. The events to be detected are explosions that have been caused by the cutter head of the roadheader machine and which are initiated in the vicinity of the machine, but not fires occurring outside the cutting zone. The functional reliability of the sensors shall not be impaired by local factors (dust, water/mist, construction materials, etc.). The function of the sensors shall be proven by means of a function test with a methane flame. 4.2.3 Extinguishing agent co
