(Main)Fire resistance tests for non-loadbearing elements - Part 2: Ceilings
Fire resistance tests for non-loadbearing elements - Part 2: Ceilings
This part of EN 1364 specifies a method for determining the fire resistance of ceilings, which in themselves possess fire resistance independent of any building element above them. This European Standard is used in conjunction with EN 1363-1.
The method is applicable to ceilings, which are either suspended by hangers or fixed directly to a supporting frame or construction, and to self-supporting ceilings.
Within this test method, the ceiling is exposed to fire, with the exposure being applied either:
a) from below the ceiling, or
b) from above the ceiling to simulate fire within the cavity above the ceiling.
The contribution to fire resistance which a suspended ceiling might provide as a protective membrane to loadbearing elements is determined using the procedure given in EN 13381-1. The fire resistance of loadbearing floors in conjunction with a suspended ceiling can also be assessed by using tests according to EN 1365-2.

Overview
EN 1364-2:2018 - Fire resistance tests for non-loadbearing elements, Part 2: Ceilings - is a European Standard published by CEN that specifies a laboratory test method to determine the fire resistance of ceilings that have intrinsic fire resistance independent of any structure above them. The standard applies to self-supporting ceilings, ceilings fixed to a supporting frame, and suspended ceilings. Tests simulate exposure either from below (room fire) or from above (fire in the ceiling cavity). EN 1364-2:2018 is used in conjunction with EN 1363-1 (general requirements).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Ceilings as non-loadbearing elements; distinction between self-supporting and suspended systems; two exposure orientations (from below / from above).
- Test specimen and installation: Requirements for specimen design, size, orientation, support conditions and construction detailing to ensure representative test results.
- Test equipment and conditions: Furnace setup, conditioning, pressure control and instrumentation appropriate for fire resistance testing of ceilings.
- Instrumentation: Placement of thermocouples (including plate/furnace and unexposed surface thermocouples) and pressure measurement for reliable data capture.
- Test procedure and observations: Fire exposure, monitoring, integrity checks (e.g., combustion penetration) and insulation behaviour assessment.
- Performance criteria: Measured end-points such as integrity and insulation, and rules for interpreting failure during exposure from below or above.
- Field of direct application: Rules for extending test results to other sizes, fittings, cavity conditions, hanger lengths and services (cables, pipes) above or below the ceiling.
- Reporting: Required content for a complete test report to support certification, specification and regulatory compliance.
Practical applications
- Demonstrating the fire resistance rating of ceiling systems for building approvals and product certification.
- Designing and specifying suspended ceilings, acoustic ceilings, and specialty ceiling assemblies where fire performance is required.
- Assessing the effect of ceiling construction on protection of underlying loadbearing elements (note: contribution to loadbearing elements is addressed by EN 13381-1 and combined floor/ceiling systems by EN 1365-2).
- Informing installation guidance regarding cavity design, hanger lengths and penetrations for services.
Who should use this standard
- Fire test laboratories and certification bodies
- Ceiling manufacturers and product developers
- Fire safety engineers and consultants
- Architects, specifiers and building control authorities
- Construction and fit-out contractors
