General Information
Overview
EN 14498:2004 (CEN) specifies a laboratory test method to determine the volume and weight changes of injection products used for swelling‑fitted filling of cracks, voids and interstices in concrete, when exposed to alternating air‑drying and water‑storage cycles. The standard defines specimen preparation, apparatus, conditioning regimes, measurement cadence and reporting requirements for assessing dimensional stability after casting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Injection products for filling cracks, voids and interstices in concrete (swelling/fitted filling).
- Specimens: Prismatic moulds 5 mm × 40 mm × 160 mm; thickness normally (5 ± 1) mm (10 ± 1 mm or 15 ± 1 mm allowed if handling requires).
- Number of specimens: Minimum six (three for conditioning regime A, three for regime B).
- Apparatus & environment:
- Dimensional measurement accuracy 0.1 mm; balance capacity 500 g with 0.01 g accuracy.
- Water bath at (21 ± 2) °C; storage room at (21 ± 2) °C and (60 ± 10) % RH; oven at (50 ± 2) °C with forced ventilation.
- Volume measured by buoyancy (weigh in air and apparent weight in water), using water specific gravity 0.998 at test temperature.
- Conditioning regimes:
- Regime A: Continuous immersion in potable water at (21 ± 2) °C. Volume/weight measured at 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, 168 h, 264 h, 312 h and 336 h; extend immersion until constant weight is reached.
- Regime B: Ten wet/dry cycles - 1 day drying in oven at (50 ± 2) °C, then 6 days immersion at (21 ± 2) °C. Measurements taken at the end of each cycle after immersion; final immersion until constant weight.
- Acceptance of constant weight: weight variation < 1 % over three consecutive 24‑hour measurements.
- Results: Changes in volume and weight expressed as percentage change (reported to one decimal), plus visual inspection for cracking or other phenomena.
- Reporting: Test report must include reference to EN 14498, laboratory and product identification, specimen preparation details, test conditions, individual and average results, diagrams, accuracy and signature.
Applications and users
EN 14498:2004 is used for:
- Product development and R&D to quantify dimensional stability of injection materials.
- Quality control and factory/independent laboratory testing for product conformity.
- Specification and selection of injection products for concrete repair and rehabilitation.
- Performance documentation for contractors, structural engineers, procurement teams and certification bodies involved in concrete protection and repair.
Target users: manufacturers of injection products, testing laboratories, consulting engineers, specification writers, contractors and conformity assessment bodies.
