Overview

EN ISO 24443:2021/A1:2026 is the European standard amendment detailing in vitro methods for determining the UVA photoprotection provided by sunscreen products. Published by CEN and prepared in collaboration with ISO Technical Committees, this amendment modifies the original EN ISO 24443:2021 standard by updating test protocols, robotic specifications, and sample handling procedures for improved accuracy and repeatability in sunscreen product evaluation.

Ensuring reliable UVA photoprotection assessment is crucial for manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and laboratories in the cosmetics industry. With consumer and regulatory focus intensifying around sun protection, harmonized and precise methods such as those described in this standard support product safety, innovation, and global market compliance.

Key Topics

  • Standardized In Vitro Method: Specifies updated procedures for measuring sunscreen UVA protection using PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) plates, ensuring consistent laboratory practices.
  • Sample Preparation and Handling: Details protocols for product storage, application temperature, and plate cleaning to minimize variability and maximize reproducibility.
  • Manual and Automated Spreading: Introduces meticulous procedures for both human fingertip and robotic application of sunscreen, enhancing method flexibility and precision.
  • Robotic Appliance Requirements: Defines technical specifications for robotic systems, including positional repeatability, force application, and the use of a silicon-based finger tool, which fosters automation in sunscreen testing.
  • Plate Surface Requirements: Provides updated roughness values and specifications for sandblasted PMMA plates to standardize test surfaces across laboratories.
  • Drying and Testing Conditions: Clarifies drying time, environmental controls, and UV exposure conditions to align experimental parameters, ensuring reliable UVA absorbance readings.

Applications

  • Cosmetic Product Development: Laboratories and R&D teams use this standard to consistently evaluate UVA photoprotection, informing product formulation and differentiation.
  • Quality Control: Manufacturing sites rely on these methods to confirm batch-to-batch uniformity in sunscreen efficacy, contributing to product integrity and consumer safety.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to EN ISO 24443:2021/A1:2026 assures conformance with European and international regulatory requirements for sun protection cosmetics.
  • Third-Party Testing & Certification: Testing labs use these protocols to provide trusted, reproducible results needed for market access, certification, and product labeling.
  • Innovation in Testing Automation: The inclusion of robotic spreading protocols supports the adoption of laboratory automation, reducing human error and increasing throughput in high-volume testing environments.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 24443:2021: Original standard for in vitro determination of sunscreen UVA photoprotection, forming the foundation for this amendment.
  • ISO 24442: In vitro test methods for evaluating UVB protection in sunscreens, complementary to UVA testing requirements.
  • ISO/TC 217 and CEN/TC 392 standards: Broader standards for cosmetics safety, efficacy, and testing adopted across international markets.

Compliance with these harmonized laboratory test methods supports the safety and efficacy claims of sunscreen products and facilitates successful navigation of evolving cosmetic regulations. By implementing EN ISO 24443:2021/A1:2026, stakeholders in the cosmetics industry demonstrate commitment to scientific rigor and consumer protection in the evaluation of UVA photoprotection.
