Overview
EN 13579:2002 is a CEN standard that specifies a laboratory test method to evaluate the effect of hydrophobic impregnation on the drying-rate coefficient of concrete specimens. The method is intended primarily for the protection and repair of concrete structures and provides a repeatable procedure to compare treated and untreated concrete from the same batch.
Key aspects of the method include the use of 100 mm concrete cubes, controlled conditioning and drying environments, and a defined treatment procedure for impregnations. The outcome is expressed as a Drying Rate Coefficient (DRC) - the ratio of mean drying rates of treated versus untreated cubes, expressed as a percentage.
Key Topics
Principle: Compare drying rates of treated and untreated test cubes from the same concrete batch; DRC = 100 × (mean drying rate of treated cubes / mean drying rate of untreated cubes).
Specimens: Nine 100 mm × 100 mm × 100 mm concrete cubes cast from a single batch (Type C per EN 1766) and cured 28 days.
Apparatus and conditions:
- Balance accurate to 0.01 g
- Environmental cabinet at (30 ± 2) °C and (40 ± 5) % RH
- Laboratory conditioning at (21 ± 2) °C and (60 ± 10) % RH
- Oven at (105 ± 5) °C and desiccator for drying
- Fume cupboard and petri dish dipping set-up
Preparation and conditioning:
- Clean and surface-dry cubes; determine saturated surface-dry and oven-dry weights
- Condition six cubes for 7 days in laboratory conditions until moisture content is (5.0 ± 0.5) %
- Oven-dry three cubes to calculate reference saturated surface-dry moisture content
Treatment:
- Treat three cubes by dipping each face into the impregnant for (120 ± 5) s, measuring consumption (g/m²)
- Store treated cubes in fume cupboard for (48 ± 1) h after start of treatment
Test procedure & calculations:
- Drying test on three untreated cubes starts immediately after conditioning: weigh at 0 h, 6 h and 24 h to compute drying rate
- Drying test on treated cubes starts 48 h after treatment: weigh at 0 h, 24 h and 48 h to compute drying rate
- Compute mean drying rates and DRC; optionally retain cubes for EN 13580 absorption and alkali-resistance tests
Applications
- Quality control and performance comparison of hydrophobic impregnation products
- Assessing potential impact of impregnation on moisture transport in concrete repair and protection projects
- Supporting specification and acceptance testing for protective treatments on concrete structures
Related Standards
- EN 1766 - Reference concretes for testing (used for casting and curing cubes)
- EN 13580 - Water absorption and alkali resistance tests for hydrophobic impregnations (can use the same cubes after the drying test)
This standard provides a practical, repeatable laboratory route to quantify how hydrophobic impregnations affect drying behaviour of concrete - a key parameter for long-term durability and repair planning.
