Overview
EN 10244-6:2001 (CEN) specifies requirements and test methods for copper, bronze and brass coatings on steel wire and wire products. The part focuses on coating material, coating mass, porosity and the procedures used to determine these properties. It supports consistent product conformity, quality control and corrosion performance assessment for manufacturers, suppliers and specifiers of coated steel wire.
Key Topics
- Material composition: Copper coatings shall contain at least 98% copper. For bronze or brass alloys, the permissible variation in composition is to be specified at enquiry and order.
- Coating mass: The coating mass (expressed as mass per unit surface area, g/m2) shall be agreed at enquiry and order or defined by the applicable product standard. Mass can be expressed alternatively as radial thickness where appropriate.
- Gravimetric determination: The standard describes a gravimetric method in which the coating is stripped from the wire, and the mass difference before and after stripping is used to calculate coating mass per unit area. Samples must be degreased if necessary and weighed with appropriate precision; sample length follows the guidance in EN 10244-4.
- Chemical determination: Chemical analysis of the stripping solution (for example by atomic absorption spectrometry or colorimetry) is an allowed alternative to determine the coating mass and to confirm alloy type.
- Porosity testing: A porosity test is detailed to indicate fine discontinuities in the coating that expose the base steel. The procedure uses immersion in dilute HCl (prepared and heated to the temperature range given in the standard), followed by Fe determination (ppm) in the solution to calculate a porosity factor.
Applications
- Quality control of coated wire during production and prior to shipment
- Verification of coating mass and alloy composition for compliance with purchase orders
- Evaluation of coating integrity and potential corrosion risk through porosity testing
- Specification reference for engineering, construction and chain/rope manufacturers that require non-ferrous coatings on steel wire
Practical benefits include reproducible test methods for coating mass and porosity, clear material requirements (e.g., minimum copper content) and traceable procedures for chemical and gravimetric analysis.
Related Standards
- EN 10244-1 - General principles for non‑ferrous metallic coatings on steel wire (referenced for terms, general test conditions and overarching rules).
- EN 10244-4 - Details on sample lengths and procedures relevant to coating mass determination.
For procurement and conformity purposes, EN 10244-6:2001 should be used together with Part 1 (general principles) and the other parts of EN 10244 covering different non‑ferrous coatings. This ensures consistent interpretation of test methods, sample preparation, and reporting of results.
