Overview
CEN/TR 15339-5:2014 addresses the safety requirements for thermal spraying equipment, specifically focusing on powder and wire feed units. Issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this Technical Report is an essential reference for manufacturers, integrators, and users involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of thermal spraying systems. Used alongside CEN/TR 15339-1, this document ensures that equipment meets stringent safety and performance criteria, supporting CE conformity and regulatory compliance within the context of surface treatment processes.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the specific safety requirements for powder and wire feed units utilized in thermal spraying applications.
- Powder Feed Units: Covers features such as adjustability, flow control, integration modes (stand-alone or with torch systems), and the importance of consistent, reproducible feed rates.
- Wire Feed Units: Discusses operational methods for flame and arc spraying, highlighting control mechanisms for feed rate, safety considerations around electrical parts, and relationships between feed rate and current.
- Potential Hazards: Identifies key risks, including gas leaks, pressurized gas escape, static electricity, back flow of gases, dust exposure, explosion hazards, and electric shock risks.
- Protective Measures: Details safeguards such as leak testing, usage of inert carrier gases, dust control measures, operator protection, and mechanical safeguards against finger trapping and accidental contact with live electrical parts.
- Responsibilities: Outlines obligations for manufacturers (design and documentation), integrators (proper installation and commissioning), and users (safe operation, training, and maintenance).
- National Regulations: Stresses the need to comply with relevant European Directives and additional national rules.
Applications
CEN/TR 15339-5:2014 is relevant to a broad range of industries adopting thermal spraying for advanced coatings, surface enhancements, corrosion protection, and wear resistance. Typical application areas include:
- Aerospace: Aircraft component refurbishment, thermal barriers, and protective coatings.
- Automotive: Engine parts, exhaust components, and wear-resistant surfaces.
- Manufacturing: Tools, dies, industrial rollers, and machinery parts benefiting from improved durability and performance.
- Energy and Power Generation: Turbine blades, boiler components, and valve coatings for improved lifespan and efficiency.
- General Surface Treatment: Any context where powder or wire-fed thermal spraying is deployed, requiring robust safety and process controls.
Implementing the safety requirements set out in this Technical Report helps organizations to:
- Minimize operational hazards
- Comply with CE and ATEX 95 Directive requirements
- Enhance the reliability and repeatability of thermal spray processes
- Ensure worker safety and environmental protection during operation, maintenance, and servicing
Related Standards
To achieve comprehensive safety and process control in thermal spraying, organizations should consider these related standards:
- CEN/TR 15339-1: General requirements for thermal spraying equipment, forming the baseline for all subsequent parts.
- EN 657: Terminology and classification for thermal spraying, fundamental for understanding processes and equipment interoperability.
- EN 1395-7: Acceptance inspection criteria for powder feed systems, critical for quality control.
- CEN/TR 15339-3: Safety requirements for torches and their connection and supply units.
- EN 60974-5 & EN 60974-10: Relevant to wire feed equipment, covering both safety and electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
- ATEX 95 Directive (Directive 94/9/EC): For equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres, relevant to dust and gas safety concerns during operation.
By referencing CEN/TR 15339-5:2014 and these related documents, stakeholders in the thermal spraying industry can ensure that powder and wire feed equipment is safe, efficient, and fully compliant with European safety standards. This results in improved operational outcomes, reduced risks, and a safer working environment for all personnel.
