Overview

EN 13796-2:2017+A1:2022 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the safety requirements for cableway carriers, focusing on the slipping resistance tests for grips. This standard applies to cableway installations designed to transport passengers, including monocable and bicable aerial ropeways with fixed or detachable grips, as well as ski-tows with fixed grips. It ensures that grips clamped onto haulage or carrying ropes maintain firm attachment without unintended slippage, which is critical for operational safety.

The standard excludes installations for goods transportation and inclined lifts, concentrating solely on passenger cableways to enhance safety during transit.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application

    • Applicable to carriers in cableway installations for persons
    • Covers grips on haulage or towing ropes of monocable and bicable aerial ropeways and ski-tows
    • Addresses fixed and detachable grip types
  • Test Methods for Slipping Resistance

    • Grip tested by applying increasing tensile force until slipping occurs
    • Tests performed on parallel-lay galvanized ropes under standardized conditions
    • Minimum ten tests per grip with controlled application of force and continuous recording
  • Test Parameters and Evaluation

    • Tensile force applied corresponds to 1/6 of rope breaking load
    • Grip’s slipping resistance force (Flab) is computed as the average maximum slipping force from tests
    • Test succeeds if Flab exceeds calculated theoretical force (Ftheo) without cable movement at grip site
  • Documentation and Compliance

    • Detailed manuals describing grip design and operation must be provided
    • Visual inspection required before testing to ensure conformity
    • Test reports must comply with EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for laboratory competence
    • Supports compliance with Regulation (EU) 2016/424 on cableway installations

Applications

EN 13796-2:2017+A1:2022 supports manufacturers, testing laboratories, and operators of cableway installations in:

  • Validating grip designs for safe usage by passengers on aerial ropeways and ski-tows
  • Ensuring consistent and reliable gripping force to prevent accidents due to grip slippage
  • Facilitating regulatory compliance with European safety directives for passenger cableways
  • Improving the safety management and maintenance of ropeway carriers for mountain resorts, urban transport cableways, and tourist attractions
  • Supporting quality assurance and risk mitigation protocols in cableway installation projects

By adhering to this standard, stakeholders can enhance overall passenger safety, reduce operational risks, and increase confidence in cableway transport systems.

Related Standards

EN 13796-2:2017+A1:2022 is part of the EN 13796 suite covering safety requirements for cableway carriers, including:

  • EN 13796-1:2017 - Grips, carrier trucks, brakes, cabins, and other carrier components
  • EN 13796-3 - Fatigue testing of cableway carriers

Additional related standards addressing cableway installation safety include:

  • EN 1907:2017 - Terminology for cableway systems
  • EN 12929 - General safety requirements for cableway installations
  • EN 12930 - Calculation methods for cableways
  • EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 - Laboratory competence for testing and calibration
  • EN 1709, EN 1909 - Pre-commissioning, maintenance, and evacuation procedures

Together, these standards form a comprehensive framework to ensure robust safety practices, testing, and certification for cableway installations transporting persons.
