Overview
EN 14759:2005 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the method for expressing the acoustic insulation performance of shutters relative to airborne sound. This standard targets manufacturers of windows and shutter systems who seek to quantify the additional sound insulation benefits provided by built-in or built-on shutters installed with windows. It provides a clear framework for assessing and reporting the sound reduction index (R_w) of shutter-window assemblies, facilitating better product development, marketing, and regulatory compliance within the building and construction industry.
The standard underpins the acoustic performance evaluation of external shutters integrated with windows or French windows and complements the intrinsic acoustic requirements defined in EN 13659. The norm emphasizes practical assessment conditions, mounting types, and sound insulation metrics, thus helping manufacturers deliver acoustically optimized solutions for noise-sensitive building environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Application:
EN 14759 applies primarily to window manufacturers who utilize built-in shutters combined with windows or separately installed shutters (built-in in prefabricated boxes or built-on types) aiming to enhance sound insulation.Sound Insulation Metrics:
Acoustic performance is expressed by the weighted sound reduction index (R_w), including spectrum adaptation terms C and C_tr for pink noise and urban traffic noise, respectively. This is in accordance with EN ISO 717-1.Mounting Types:
The standard defines six specific mounting configurations influencing acoustic performance:- Built-in shutter with window:
- Type 1: Box behind lintel
- Type 2: Box inside opening
- Built-in shutter only:
- Type 3: Fabricated behind lintel
- Type 4: Prefabricated box
- Built-on shutter:
- Type 5: Box outside opening
- Type 6: Box inside opening
- Built-in shutter with window:
Testing and Measurement:
Laboratory testing methods conform to EN ISO 140-3 are required to produce reliable and repeatable acoustic data under defined size, boundary, and mounting conditions.Performance Declaration:
The standard mandates comprehensive reporting of results, including:- R_w with shutter retracted and extended
- Corresponding mounting type
- Distance between window and shutter (d)
- Tested window dimensions
Applications
Window and Shutter Manufacturers:
Enables product developers to quantify and market enhanced acoustic performance of shutters integrated with windows, supporting product differentiation for noise reduction in residential and commercial buildings.Architects and Building Designers:
Provides authoritative information on sound insulation values to assist in specifying shutter and window systems suitable for projects requiring effective airborne sound control.Acoustic Consultants:
Facilitates accurate assessment of combined window-shutter assemblies to predict and improve building envelope noise performance in urban or noisy environments.Building Code Compliance:
Supports fulfillment of regulatory acoustic requirements by providing standardized testing and reporting formats for shutter sound insulation performance.
