Overview

EN 14759:2005 is a European Standard developed by CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation) that specifies methods for expressing the acoustic insulation performance of shutters with respect to airborne sound. This standard is particularly aimed at manufacturers of windows and shutters who want to demonstrate the additional sound insulation properties offered by the integration or installation of shutters, whether they are built-in with the window, installed in a prefabricated box, or fitted as a separate built-on unit.

The standard covers how to measure and report the sound reduction index when shutters are either retracted or extended, including details about mounting types and installation variables that can affect acoustic performance. Adopting EN 14759:2005 ensures uniformity in the expression of shutter performance across Europe, aiding manufacturers, specifiers, and end-users.

Key Topics

  • Acoustic Insulation: The standard focuses on the sound reduction index (Rw), including spectrum adaptation terms (C and Ctr) for different types of noise such as pink noise and urban traffic.
  • Types of Shutter Installations: Specification of both built-in shutters (with windows or in prefabricated boxes) and built-on shutters, detailing six mounting configurations (Type 1-6), which influence acoustic outcomes.
  • Performance Expression: Requirements for declaring acoustic performance, including distance between shutter and glazing, mounting type, and window dimensions.
  • Test Methods: Reference to laboratory test conditions as described in related standards (e.g., EN ISO 140-3).
  • Definitions: Clear terminology for distances, mounting types, and performance indices to ensure a common understanding across manufacturers and markets.

Applications

EN 14759:2005 is especially valuable for:

  • Window and Shutter Manufacturers: Enables companies to benchmark and communicate the sound insulation performance of products, supporting product differentiation and compliance in the European market.
  • Architects and Specifiers: Provides reliable, standardized data for including effective acoustic solutions in building envelopes, particularly in noise-sensitive environments such as urban or mixed-use developments.
  • Building and Acoustic Consultants: Assists in specifying products that meet project requirements for airborne sound insulation, supporting regulatory compliance and certification.
  • End-users and Buyers: Offers transparency and comparability when choosing windows and shutters based on certified acoustic performance.

The standard is essential wherever windows are paired with external shutters, especially in applications where noise control and enhanced comfort are priorities.

Related Standards

For comprehensive assessment and application, EN 14759:2005 should be considered alongside the following standards:

  • EN 13659: Shutters - Performance requirements including safety. Covers overall requirements for shutters, including security and durability.
  • EN ISO 717-1: Acoustics - Rating of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements - Part 1: Airborne sound insulation. Defines performance criteria and measurement reporting.
  • EN 12216: Shutters, external blinds, internal blinds - Terminology, glossary and definitions. Establishes standard nomenclature for clarity and consistency.
  • EN ISO 140-3: Acoustics - Measurement of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements - Part 3: Laboratory measurements of airborne sound insulation.

Practical Value

By complying with EN 14759:2005, manufacturers, designers, and specifiers can:

  • Guarantee consistent, repeatable measurement and reporting of shutter acoustic insulation
  • Facilitate easier product selection and specification for noise control in construction projects
  • Support harmonized European market access with recognized performance claims
  • Improve end-user satisfaction via enhanced building acoustics
