Elastomeric seals - Materials requirements for pipe joint seals used in water and drainage applications - Part 4: Cast polyurethane sealing elements
This Standard specifies requirements for materials used in factory cast polyurethane sealing elements used in joints for drainage, sewerage and rainwater systems and non potable water supply for continuous flow up to 45°C. General requirements for finished joint seals are also given; any additional requirements called for by the particular application are specified in the relevant product standards taking into account that the performance of pipe joints is a function of the seal material properties, seal geometry and pipe joint design.
This Standard is applicable to joint seals for all pipeline materials, including iron, steel, clay, fibre cement, concrete, plastics and glass-reinforced plastics.

Overview
EN 681-4:2000 is a European Standard developed by CEN, focusing on materials requirements for elastomeric pipe joint seals, specifically cast polyurethane sealing elements. This standard ensures that sealing materials used in water and drainage applications meet stringent quality and performance criteria to maintain reliable and durable joint integrity. It applies to factory-cast polyurethane seals used in joints for drainage, sewerage, rainwater systems, and non-potable water supplies with continuous flow temperatures up to 45°C.
The standard covers seals compatible with various pipeline materials including iron, steel, clay, fibre cement, concrete, plastics, and glass-reinforced plastics. It also highlights the importance of seal material properties, seal geometry, and joint design in achieving optimal pipeline performance.
Key Topics
- Material Specifications: Defines the physical and chemical requirements for cast polyurethane sealing elements to ensure durability and resistance to environmental factors typical in water and drainage systems.
- Application Range: Suitable for drainage, sewerage, rainwater systems, and non-potable water supply pipelines, supporting continuous flow temperatures up to 45°C.
- Compatibility: Applicable across a wide range of pipeline materials such as:
- Iron and steel
- Clay and fibre cement
- Concrete
- Various plastics and glass-reinforced plastics
- General Seal Requirements: Outlines general performance parameters for finished joint seals, ensuring effective sealing under operational conditions.
- Performance Factors: Emphasizes that successful pipe joint sealing depends on a combination of seal material quality, seal geometry, and overall pipe joint design.
Applications
EN 681-4:2000 is essential for manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance professionals involved in producing and selecting pipe joint seals for water and drainage infrastructure. Key applications include:
- Municipal sewerage and drainage systems: Reliable sealing in pipes that manage wastewater and stormwater.
- Rainwater collection and transport: Ensuring watertight joints in rainwater drainage networks.
- Non-potable water systems: Providing durable seals in pipelines transporting recycled or reclaimed water.
- Industrial drainage and water systems: Effective sealing in processes requiring resistance to moderate temperature and chemical exposure.
- Pipeline rehabilitation and maintenance: Replacing or upgrading seals to meet standardized material requirements ensures system longevity and regulatory compliance.
Related Standards
EN 681-4:2000 is part of a broader family of standards on elastomeric seals used in pipe joint assemblies. Other relevant standards to consider include:
- EN 681-1 to EN 681-3: Covering different types of elastomers and their material requirements for various water and drainage applications.
- Product-specific standards: Standards tailored to particular pipe types and applications that may specify additional performance criteria beyond EN 681-4:2000.
- Pipe joint design standards: Documents that complement material standards by specifying mechanical and structural joint requirements.
By integrating EN 681-4:2000 in product design and quality control, stakeholders ensure optimal performance of polyurethane sealing elements in diverse water and drainage systems, enhancing durability, environmental resistance, and compliance with European regulatory frameworks.
