Overview
EN 12920:2006/prA1 is a European Standard developed by the Technical Committee CEN/TC 292 focused on the characterization of waste. This amendment updates the original EN 12920:2006 by refining the methodology for determining the leaching behaviour of waste under specified conditions, including waste from the extractive industry. The standard addresses the assessment of how waste materials release contaminants when exposed to environmental factors such as water infiltration over defined time frames and scenarios.
This methodology supports the reliable evaluation of leaching patterns to inform waste disposal, recovery, and environmental risk management strategies. It is designed to provide a systematic framework for characterizing waste properties, predicting acid generation, and understanding the impact of various physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological influences on leaching behaviour.
Key Topics
Leaching Behaviour Determination
Specifies a detailed methodology to evaluate the release of substances from waste under controlled, scenario-based conditions to predict potential environmental impacts.Acid Generation Behaviour
Introduces the concept of acid generation behaviour, especially relevant to wastes originating from mining and extractive industries. This includes acid rock drainage (ARD) and acid mine drainage (AMD), defined as the release of low pH drainage due to sulfide and elemental sulfur oxidation.Scenario and Problem Definition
Encourages clear definition of the waste management problem, relevant scenarios including disposal and recovery options, and anticipated waste characteristics (especially relevant for extractive industry waste).Influence of Parameters
Identifies a broad range of parameters affecting leaching behaviour including:- Chemical factors (pH, redox potential, dissolved organic matter)
- Physical factors (temperature sensitivity, particle size, moisture absorption)
- Mechanical and geotechnical factors (permeability, compaction effects)
- Biological factors (biodegradation, sulphide oxidation)
Stepwise Approach
Details a logical sequence for conducting characterization, from problem definition through waste description, scenario assessment, influence parameter determination, testing, and concluding recommendations.
Applications
Waste Management Planning
Supports effective design of waste disposal and recovery operations by predicting contaminant leaching and acid generation, especially critical for mining waste.Environmental Risk Assessment
Provides methodologies essential for evaluating potential soil and groundwater contamination risks posed by landfill or excavation activities.Regulatory Compliance
Assists waste producers, environmental consultants, and regulatory bodies in meeting national and European legislation on waste characterization and management.Mine Waste Assessment
Specialized amendments address mining waste streams, enabling meaningful prediction of acid rock drainage and facilitating closure and rehabilitation planning for extractive sites.Research and Development
Establishes standardized test procedures for scientific studies on waste leaching dynamics under various climatic and geochemical conditions.
