Overview

EN ISO 18473-4:2023 (ISO 18473-4:2022) defines requirements and test methods for nanoscale titanium dioxide (TiO2) supplied as powder or suspension for photocatalytic applications. It covers modified nano‑TiO2 (surface treatment, coating, doping or combinations) and establishes classification, designation, sampling, marking and test reporting requirements relevant to manufacturers, suppliers and users of photocatalytic functional pigments.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and forms: Applies to nanoscale TiO2 in powder or suspension form for photocatalytic use; modifications (coatings, doping, surface treatment) are included.
  • Classification: Crystal structure is classified as anatase or mainly anatase with low rutile content.
  • Designation: Materials can be designated by median primary particle size (d50) and other agreed characteristics.
  • Essential requirements (summary of Table 1):
    • Median primary particle size (d50): ≤ 100 nm (reported by TEM; D10, D50, D90 number‑based distribution and TEM image).
    • Specific surface area: ≥ 35 m2/g (BET method, ISO 9277).
    • Residue on 45 µm sieve: < 0.05% (ISO 787-18).
    • Mass fraction of TiO2: ≥ 80% after ignition treatment (ISO 591-1).
    • pH of 4% suspension: 1.5 to 9 with batch deviation < 0.5 (ISO 787-9).
    • Crystal structure reporting by XRD; bulk density reported to buyer (ISO 787-11).
  • Conditional/additional powder requirements (subject to agreement): moisture ≤ 15% (ISO 787-2), loss on ignition ≤ 20% (ISO 3262-1), elemental impurity reporting as required.
  • Test methods referenced: TEM for particle sizing, XRD for crystal phase, BET (ISO 9277) for surface area, and other ISO methods listed in the normative references.

Applications and users

  • Practical applications: Photocatalytic coatings and paints, self‑cleaning and antifogging surfaces, air and water purification, deodorization, antibacterial/antifungal finishes, and green chemistry photocatalysis.
  • Who uses this standard:
    • Nano‑TiO2 manufacturers and formulators
    • Paints, coatings and construction‑materials producers
    • Environmental technology and water/air treatment suppliers
    • Quality control and testing laboratories
    • Regulatory bodies and procurement teams specifying photocatalytic materials

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).
