Protective equipment for martial arts - Part 8: Additional requirements and test methods for karate face protectors

This European standard specifies additional test methods and requirements for face protectors, used in the practice of karate.
This European Standard is not applicable for other sports equipment and protectors except face protectors for karate because the test methods and requirements are very specific for karate face protectors and do not meet the characteristics of face protectors for other sports.

La présente Norme européenne spécifie des exigences et des méthodes d'essai complémentaires relatives aux protections faciales utilisées dans la pratique du karaté.
Elle n'est pas applicable aux autres protecteurs et équipements sportifs car les exigences et méthodes d'essai décrites sont tout à fait spécifiques des protections faciales de karaté et ne répondent pas aux caractéristiques des protections faciales utilisées dans la pratique des autres sports.

EN 13277-8:2017 is a CEN European standard that specifies additional requirements and test methods for karate face protectors used in karate practice. It complements the general requirements in EN 13277-1 and is specific to karate face guards - not intended for face protectors used in other sports. The standard defines performance, sizing, testing and marking requirements to ensure reliable protection of the upper face (nose, cheekbones, eyebrows, temple and eyes).

• Design and materials: Protectors shall be transparent (preferably colourless) and free from rough or sharp edges where they contact the user.
• Mass and sizes:
  • Mask mass (excluding harness): S = 110 g, M = 130 g, L = 150 g.
  • Harness mass: 50 g for each size.
  • Sizes defined by head circumference: S < 54 cm, M 54–58 cm, L > 58 cm.
• Field of vision: Unobstructed minimum angles - horizontal 105°, upper 25°, lower 45° (tested per EN 13087-6 procedures adjusted for no ballast).
• Restraint system: Must allow the wearer to fasten without help; mask must not shift more than 2 mm during specified tests. Restraint test applies a (40 ± 2) N force at defined positions.
• Nose clearance & protection zone: Minimum clearances - ≥30 mm for M/L, >20 mm for S between mask interior and tip of nose. Protection zone must cover from reference points E and F to 15 mm below nose tip.
• Flexibility/deformation: Masks must withstand compression without contacting the headform nose and must recover shape after forces of (+100–200) N for M/L and (+100–150) N for S.
• Impact strength: Must resist impacts without breakage or bursting; defined impact test positions and energy levels are specified.
• Marking & documentation: Must be marked “Only for karate” and include reference to EN 13277-8 along with manufacturer instructions.
