Overview

EN 13888-1:2022 is a European standard established by CEN that specifies the requirements, classification, designation, marking, and labelling of ceramic tile grouts. This standard applies to grouts used for both internal and external tile installations on walls and floors, including ceramic tiles and other compatible tile materials such as natural and agglomerated stones. It covers terminology, application properties, and performance criteria for cementitious and reaction resin grouts. However, it does not address design and installation guidelines for ceramic tiles themselves.

Updated in 2022, this document supersedes the previous 2009 edition and aligns with the companion Part 2 standard EN 13888-2:2022, which defines test methods for grout performance. EN 13888-1:2022 ensures uniform quality, safety, and labelling practices for grouts across the construction industry in Europe.

Key Topics

  • Scope & Terminology: Defines ceramic tile grouts and their intended applications, including working methods and terminology related to these materials.

  • Product Types:

    • Cementitious grouts (CG): Hydraulic binder-based grouts mixed on-site with water or liquid additives.
    • Reaction resin grouts (RG): Synthetic resin-based grouts with chemical hardening processes.
  • Performance Requirements:

    • Basic and additional characteristics such as flexural strength, compressive strength, water absorption, abrasion resistance, shrinkage, and chemical resistance.
    • Cementitious grouts have classifications for normal, improved, and fast setting varieties.
    • Reaction resin grouts are characterized by higher mechanical strength and lower water absorption.
  • Classification and Designation:

    • Clear symbols are assigned for types and classes of grout (e.g., CG1, CG2 W, RG).
  • Marking and Labelling:

    • Mandatory clear marking of product name, manufacturer information, production date, shelf life, applicable grout type, and detailed instructions including mix proportions, pot life, cleaning time, and field of application.
  • Application Methods:

    • Manual application with rubber floats or tools.
    • Use of air pressurized or handguns mainly for resin grouts.
    • Mechanical machinery for large-scale grout application.
  • Working & Cleaning: Guidance provided for cleaning tile surfaces after grout application either manually or mechanized.

Applications

EN 13888-1:2022 plays a crucial role in:

  • Construction and Renovation: Ensures the use of grout materials with verified performance for ceramic tile installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

  • Tile Installers and Contractors: Provides clear product specifications and labelling to select appropriate grouts based on site conditions such as indoor/outdoor environments, substrate types, and exposure to climate or chemicals.

  • Manufacturers and Suppliers: Standardizes product classifications and labelling requirements, supporting consistent quality and regulatory compliance across European markets.

  • Quality Assurance and Compliance: Enables testing per EN 13888-2:2022 to verify properties like flexural strength, water resistance, and shrinkage that impact durability and service life of tile installations.

  • Architects and Specifiers: Facilitates informed decision-making by defining grout types, characteristics, and suitability for various tiling projects, ensuring appropriate material selection and risk mitigation.

Related Standards

  • EN 13888-2:2022 – Grouts for ceramic tiles: Test methods
Complements Part 1 by detailing laboratory procedures to assess grout performance characteristics such as strength, water absorption, abrasion, and chemical resistance.

Introduction
The characteristics of the construction products defined in this document take into consideration that
the normal stresses due to the works for which they are intended, assembled or installed, can be
properly accommodated. Some special characteristics will take into account the type of substrate and
that the grouts should resist the degrading actions of climate, environment, etc.
Many properties of grouts for ceramic tiles are mainly determined by the type of binders used.
Tile grouts are defined in different types depending on the chemical nature of their binders.
The different types have specific characteristics in terms of application properties and final
performance.
The relationship between characteristics and the working conditions (dry or humid conditions, hot
climate, fast setting, etc.) is not given in this document.
The manufacturer gives information about the use of the product and the correct conditions of use.
The specifier evaluates the state of the job site (mechanical, thermal and chemical influences) and
chooses the appropriate product considering all the possible risks.

The EN 13888-1:2022 standard provides a comprehensive framework for the requirements, classification, designation, marking, and labeling of grouts used in ceramic tile applications. Its scope includes specifically ceramic tile grouts intended for both internal and external installations on walls and floors, making it highly relevant for practitioners in the field of construction and tile installation. One of the key strengths of this standard is its thorough definition of terminology related to ceramic tile grouts, which enhances clarity and understanding among professionals. By outlining working methods, as referenced in Annex A, it promotes best practices in application properties, ensuring that users have a solid foundation for using these products effectively. Moreover, the EN 13888-1:2022 specifies performance requirements for two major types of grouts: cementitious and reaction resin grouts. This distinction is crucial as it allows users to make informed decisions based on the specific needs of their projects, whether they are selecting materials for durability, ease of application, or suitability for varying environmental conditions. Additionally, the standard's flexibility in allowing ceramic tile grouts to be used with other tile materials, such as natural and agglomerated stones, broadens its applicability across various installation contexts, provided that the integrity of the materials is maintained. This aspect ensures that professionals can leverage ceramic tile grouts in diverse applications, enhancing their utility in the marketplace. Overall, EN 13888-1:2022 stands out as a critical document, reinforcing the quality and performance standards of grouts for ceramic tiles, and thereby supporting the overall excellence of construction practices in tiling installations. Its clear guidelines and comprehensive coverage contribute significantly to the industry, assisting both manufacturers and applicators in achieving optimal results.
