Overview
FprEN 12697-13: Bituminous Mixtures – Test Methods – Part 13: Temperature Measurement is a European draft standard developed by CEN/TC 227. This document specifies standardized procedures for the accurate measurement of the temperature of asphalt mixtures after mixing, as well as during storage, transportation, and laying processes. It covers both contact temperature-measuring devices and non-contact infrared thermometers. The standard ensures that temperature data is reliable and repeatable, which is essential for the quality control and performance of bituminous mixtures in road construction.
Key Topics
- Temperature Measurement Methods
- Describes how to assess the temperature of asphalt mixtures using two primary approaches:
- Contact temperature measuring devices (probes): Inserted into the mixture at specified depths and locations.
- Infrared thermometers: Non-contact devices measuring surface temperature with adjustable emissivity.
- Describes how to assess the temperature of asphalt mixtures using two primary approaches:
- Measurement Procedures
- Covers procedures for measuring asphalt temperature:
- In a lorry (truck)
- After laying, before or during rolling
- In a material heap
- In a paver hopper (for infrared thermometers)
- Covers procedures for measuring asphalt temperature:
- Device Requirements
- Contact Devices:
- Must measure to the nearest 1°C with a maximum error of 2°C.
- Probes must have a minimum length of 200 mm and quick response time.
- Infrared Thermometers:
- Require adjustment for material emissivity (typically 0.90–0.98 for asphalt).
- Must measure with an appropriate angle (50°–90°) and distance to ensure accurate readings.
- Contact Devices:
- Procedural Consistency
- Multiple measurements (at least four) must be averaged for each scenario to ensure representativeness.
- Safety provisions are emphasized, especially when measuring in or near moving equipment and hot material.
- Reference Method
- In case of discrepancies between results, the reference is always the contact temperature measuring device.
Applications
- Road Construction Quality Control
- Ensures asphalt mixtures are handled and installed within optimal temperature ranges, minimizing defects and maximizing durability.
- Process Monitoring
- Critical throughout storage, transport, laying, and compaction stages to maintain correct material properties.
- Dispute Resolution
- Provides a standardized method for temperature measurement, facilitating the resolution of discrepancies and contract compliance.
- Laboratory and Site Testing
- Useful both for laboratory sample validation and onsite inspections, supporting consistent testing across European projects.
- Safety in Operations
- Emphasizes safe procedures, especially when working near hot materials and moving vehicles or machinery.
Related Standards
- EN 12697 Series: Comprehensive standards for testing bituminous mixtures, including sampling, characterization, and performance methods.
- EN 12697-1 to EN 12697-35: Cover different aspects of asphalt mixture testing.
- ISO and IEC Terminology Databases: Support consistent use of definitions and terms relevant to temperature measurement and materials testing.
- EN 12697-13:2017: The previous version, which this draft will supersede, with improved accuracy requirements and updated test reporting protocols.
Summary
Adhering to FprEN 12697-13 is crucial for construction professionals, quality engineers, and laboratory technicians involved with asphalt mixtures in road pavement. This standard provides a robust framework for accurate temperature measurement, incorporating both traditional and advanced instrumentation, practical application methods, and detailed reporting requirements. Its application helps improve road performance, supports contract and regulatory compliance, and enhances occupational safety in the field of road construction and bituminous mixture testing.
