Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 40: In situ drainability

This document describes a method to determine the in situ relative hydraulic conductivity, at specific locations, of a road surfacing that is designed to be permeable. An estimate of the average value for the surfacing is obtained from the mean value of a number of determinations on each section of road.
The test measures the ability to drain water (drainability) achieved in situ of a surfacing. As such, it can be used as a compliance check to ensure that a permeable surface course has the required properties when it is laid. The test can also be used subsequently to establish the change of drainage ability with time.
For the test to be valid, the surface of the test area should be clean and free from detritus. Measurements can be made when a road is either wet or dry, but not if it is in a frozen state.

Mélanges bitumineux - Méthodes d'essai - Partie 40 : Drainabilité in situ

Overview

The EN 12697-40:2020 standard, developed by CEN, specifies a test method for determining the in situ drainability of bituminous mixtures used in road surfacing. This test evaluates the relative hydraulic conductivity of permeable road surfaces at specific locations, measuring how effectively water drains through the pavement. Assessing in situ drainability is crucial for ensuring that permeable surfaces meet designed permeability requirements and for monitoring the change of drainage ability over time.

The standard supersedes the 2012 edition and extends applicability beyond hot mix asphalt to other bituminous mixtures. This reliable and standardized approach supports compliance checking, helps optimize road performance, and guides maintenance decision-making based on drainage characteristics.

Key Topics

  • Purpose and Scope
EN 12697-40:2020 focuses on determining the hydraulic conductivity of permeable road surfaces by measuring water outflow through the surface. It calculates an average value of relative hydraulic conductivity from several measurements on a road section.

  • Test Principles
The test utilizes a radial-flow falling head permeameter placed on the pavement, measuring the time for 4 liters of water to flow through a defined annular area. The reciprocal of this outflow time, adjusted for apparatus resistance, yields the relative hydraulic conductivity.

  • Apparatus Requirements
The permeameter is a specialized device with calibrated dimensions for consistent results. Key components include:

    • Transparent acrylic standpipe for water level observation
    • Rubber ball plunger and sponge rubber base for watertight seal
    • Stopwatch with 0.1-second accuracy (preferably sensor-activated)
    • Standing board to uniformly apply pressure on the surface
  • Test Procedure
Measurements are made at ten marked locations spaced along the pavement width. The permeameter is loaded with clean water, air bubbles are removed, and water outflow times are recorded twice per location. The average outflow times are used in calculations.

  • Calculations & Reporting
The relative hydraulic conductivity is calculated by subtracting the series resistance time from the average outflow time and then taking the reciprocal. The test report must document site conditions, ambient temperature, test equipment details, load applied, individual results, and the final conductivity value.

  • Limitations
Tests must be performed on clean, unfrozen surfaces and can be conducted whether the surface is dry or wet. Precision data for this method are yet to be established.

Applications

EN 12697-40:2020 is essential for stakeholders involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of permeable bituminous pavements, including:

  • Road construction professionals requiring compliance verification of permeable surface layers.
  • Infrastructure asset managers monitoring the long-term drainage performance and degradation of permeable road surfaces.
  • Transport authorities and environmental engineers aiming to reduce surface runoff and promote sustainable urban drainage.
  • Quality control laboratories conducting standardized hydraulic conductivity assessments on-site.

By employing this standard, organizations can ensure road surfaces meet permeability specifications that help prevent water accumulation, improve driving safety, and promote environmental sustainability through reduced runoff.

The article discusses a new test method, EN 12697-40:2020, which determines the in situ drainability of permeable road surfacing. The test measures the ability of the surfacing to drain water, and can be used to ensure that the surface meets the required properties when it is installed. It can also be used to assess changes in drainability over time. The test should be conducted on a clean and debris-free surface, and can be done when the road is wet or dry, but not when it is frozen.
