This document specifies requirements and test methods for marketed and delivered fatty acid methyl esters (hereafter known as FAME) to be used either as fuel for diesel engines and for heating applications at 100 % concentration, or as a blend component for fuel for diesel engines and heating applications in accordance with the requirements of appropriate standards. At 100 % concentration it is applicable to fuel for use in diesel engines and in heating applications designed or subsequently adapted to run on 100 % FAME.
NOTE   For the purposes of this document, the terms “% (m/m)” and “% (V/V)” are used to represent respectively the mass fraction, µ, and the volume fraction, φ.

Dieses Dokument legt Anforderungen und Prüfverfahren fest für gehandelte und ausgelieferte Fettsäure-Methylester (im Folgenden als FAME (en: fatty acid methyl esters) bezeichnet) für die Verwendung entweder als Kraftstoff für Dieselmotoren und für Heizanwendungen bei einer Konzentration von 100 %, oder als eine Blendkomponente für Kraftstoff für Dieselmotoren und Heizöl in Übereinstimmung mit den Anforderungen der zutreffenden Normen. Bei einer Konzentration von 100 % ist FAME einsetzbar in Kraftstoffen für Dieselmotoren und in Heizungsanlagen, die für den Einsatz von 100 % FAME entwickelt oder nachträglich angepasst wurden.

Le présent document spécifie les exigences et méthodes d'essais applicables aux esters méthyliques d'acides gras (dénommés EMAG par la suite), commercialisés et livrés comme carburant pour moteurs diesel et pour des applications de chauffage, soit à une concentration de 100 %, soit comme base de mélange pour les carburants de moteurs diesel et pour le fioul domestique, conformément aux exigences des normes appropriées. A une concentration de 100 %, ce document est applicable aux carburants utilisés par les véhicules à moteur diesel et par des applications de chauffage conçus ou adaptés pour fonctionner avec 100 % d’EMAG.

This Technical Report describes the key properties of fast pyrolysis bio-oils and their importance to the fuel quality for use in stationary internal combustion engines.
Internal combustion engine (ICE) in the scope of this document means a type of engine in which heat energy and mechanical energy is produced inside the engine. ICE include compression ignition engines (diesel engines) and gas turbines.
Attention is drawn to differences especially in those properties, which can have an effect on the required engine performance, such as ash, acidity, viscosity, combustion properties, and sulfur content.
In addition to the quality requirements and related test methods for FPBO, further instructions on storage (Annex A), sampling (Clause 4), and materials compatibility (Annex B) are given.

This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for fast pyrolysis bio-oils for boiler use at industrial scale (>1 MW thermal capacity), not for domestic use. Two different grades are specified.
It is recommended to draw attention to differences especially in those properties, which can have an effect on the required flue gas treatment system, such as ash, nitrogen, and sulfur content. National and local regulations determine the requirements for flue gas treatment system.
In addition to the quality requirements and test methods for fast pyrolysis bio-oils, further instructions on storage (Annex A), sampling, and materials compatibility (Annex B) are given.

This European Standard specifies a determination method of high boiling components in petrol according to EN 228 [1] and ethanol automotive fuels according to CEN/TS 15293 [2] by capillary gas chromatography using flame ionization detection. This method is applicable to high boiling material, such as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) or diesel fuel, having a boiling point greater than or equal to 1-methyl-naphthalene.
The standard is applicable to materials having a vapour pressure low enough to permit sampling at ambient temperature and a boiling range of at least 100 °C. This method pays special attention to fatty acid methyl esters.
In petrol the measurement range for the high boiling fraction is from about 0,7 % (m/m) to about 2,5 % (m/m). For the FAME fraction the range is from about 0,2 % (m/m) to about 2 % (m/m).
In ethanol automotive fuel the measurement range is from about 0,2 % (m/m) to about 2,2 % (m/m), for the FAME fraction the range is from about 0,05 % (m/m) to about 1,5 % (m/m)
NOTE 1   When calculating the FAME fraction, this method only takes the C18-isomers into account.
NOTE 2   For the purposes of this European Standard, the terms "% (m/m)" and "% (V/V)" are used to represent respectively the mass fraction and the volume fraction.

This European Standard specifies a test method for the determination of the oxidation stability of fuels for diesel engines, by means of measuring the induction period of the fuel up to 48 h. The method is applicable to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) intended for the use as pure biofuel or as a blending component for diesel fuels, and to blends of FAME with diesel fuel containing 2 % (V/V) of FAME at minimum.
NOTE 1   EN 14112 [1] describes a similar test method for oxidation stability determination of pure fatty acid methyl esters (see the Introduction to this European Standard).
NOTE 2   For induction periods higher than 48 h the precision is not covered by the precision statement of this method. The limit values of the relevant fuel standards are well within the scope of this test method.
NOTE 3   The presence of cetane improver can reduce the oxidation stability determined by this test method. Limited studies with EHN (2-ethyl hexyl nitrate) indicated, however, that the stability is reduced to an extent which is within the reproducibility of the test method.
NOTE 4   For the purposes of this European Standard, the term "% (V/V)" is used to represent the volume fraction (φ) of a material.

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the content of undissolved substances, referred to as total contamination, in middle distillates, in diesel fuels containing up to 30 % (V/V) fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), and in neat FAME. The working range is from 12 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg and it was established in an interlaboratory study by applying EN ISO 4259 [2].
This European Standard in general applies to products having a kinematic viscosity not exceeding 8 mm2/s at 20 °C, or 5 mm2/s at 40 °C, e.g. diesel fuel as specified in EN 590 [1].
This test method may be used for diesel fuels containing more than 30 % (V/V) FAME and for petroleum products having a kinematic viscosity exceeding 8 mm2/s at 20 °C, or 5 mm2/s at 40 °C, however in such cases the precision of the test method is not defined.
NOTE 1   Excessive contamination in a fuel system can give rise to premature blocking of filters and/or hardware failure, and is therefore undesirable.
NOTE 2   For the purposes of this European Standard, the term "% (V/V)" is used to represent the volume fraction, φ, of a material.

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the polyunsaturated (≥ 4 double bonds) fatty acid (PUFA) methyl esters content of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) as a whole between 0,6 % (m/m) and 1,5 % (m/m).
The method covers the predominant four polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl esters of eicosatetraenoic acid (C 20:4 (n-6)), eicosapentaenoic acid (C 20:5 (n-3)), docosapentaenoic acid (C 22:5 (n 3), and docosahexaenoic acid (C 22:6 (n 3)).
Studies have indicated that based on the linearity of results from this European Standard, PUFA methyl esters can be determined in FAME in the range between 0,3 % (m/m) to 3,0 % (m/m). However, the precision was not established in that range, as no samples within the upper ranges where included in the final interlaboratory test (see 10.1).
Although the method is applicable to all uses, it is predominantly for FAME for use in diesel engines.

NOTE 2   This European Standard is based on A.O.C.S Official Method Ce 1b-89 [1].

This Technical Report provides background information to the deliberations within CEN that led to establish a specification for blending from more than 10 % (V/V) up to 30 % (V/V) of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) in diesel fuel to be used in captive fleet application for designated vehicles. It gives guidance and explanations to the producers, blenders, marketers and users of high FAME diesel blends (B11 to B30).
The sole designation "Bxx" refers to a FAME-diesel blend where "xx" is the specific FAME content in volume percentage. The connotation "Byy fuel" is used in this document for a fuel with a defined range of FAME allowed and having "yy" volume percentage of FAME content as the maximum of that range.
NOTE   For the purposes of this document, the term “% (m/m)” and “% (V/V)” are used to represent the mass fraction, µ, and the volume fraction, φ, respectively.
