Wood preservatives - Creosote and creosoted timber - Methods of sampling and analysis - Part 1: Procedure for sampling creosote

This European Standard specifies procedures for obtaining a representative sample from a consignment of creosote.
This standard is only applicable to consignments of creosote which are in a single phase at the time of the sampling.
NOTE 1   At ambient temperature, part of the creosote may be in crystalline form. In such cases, it is necessary to heat the creosote to a temperature above the crystallization point of the particular creosote at which it is entirely liquid before sampling.
NOTE 2   All personnel concerned with sampling and testing should be fully acquainted with the safety precautions relating to creosote. It is essential that proper safety measures for handling hazardous materials are followed when sampling creosote.

Overview

EN 1014-1:2010 is a European standard published by CEN that defines methods for sampling creosote, a common wood preservative, to ensure representative and reliable analysis. This part of the EN 1014 series specifically focuses on the procedure for sampling creosote from consignments that are in a single-phase state at the time of sampling. It is essential for accurate quality control and safety compliance related to the handling and usage of creosote-treated materials.

This standard supersedes the earlier EN 1014-1:1995 and applies throughout CEN member states. It details practical and safe methods to extract samples from pipelines and storage tanks, emphasizing the need to handle the hazardous nature of creosote carefully.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
The standard applies only to creosote consignments in a homogeneous, single-phase form. If crystallization occurs at ambient temperature, heating above the crystallization point is required before sampling.

  • Sampling Methods
EN 1014-1:2010 outlines three primary sampling methods:

    • Sampling flowing creosote from a pipeline using a specially designed sampling probe.
    • Sampling from tanks with a uniform horizontal cross-section at various depths.
    • Sampling from horizontal cylindrical tanks with detailed procedures corresponding to the tank fill level.
  • Sampling Equipment Requirements
The standard specifies apparatus such as:

    • Sampling probes with valves and precise orientation for pipeline sampling.
    • Weighted metal sampling cans designed to collect creosote from specific tank depths.
    • Glass or metal sample containers with airtight closures resistant to creosote chemicals; rubber closures are explicitly prohibited.
  • Sample Preparation and Handling
Procedures emphasize thorough mixing and sometimes heating of samples to maintain the creosote in a liquid, single-phase state prior to transferring to laboratory containers. The intermediate and laboratory sample containers are clearly defined with minimum volume requirements.

  • Safety and Reporting
Personnel involved in sampling must understand and follow safety precautions due to creosote’s hazardous properties. The standard also requires detailed sampling reports, including sample identification, sampling date, consignment size, and any deviations or observations during the sampling.

Applications

EN 1014-1:2010 is critically important for industries and laboratories involved in:

  • Wood Preservation
Ensuring proper sampling of creosote used as a wood preservative to evaluate chemical compositions and efficacy.

  • Quality Control Laboratories
Providing standardized sampling techniques to obtain representative samples, enabling accurate chemical analysis and compliance testing.

  • Environmental and Safety Compliance
Facilitating the correct handling and sampling protocols to minimize health risks associated with creosote, a toxic substance with strict regulatory controls.

  • Transportation and Storage of Creosote
Applying standardized sampling procedures during storage and shipment to verify product consistency and safety.

By adhering to EN 1014-1:2010, organizations can ensure reliable, repeatable creosote sampling results necessary for downstream analysis, regulatory compliance, and product performance verification.

Related Standards

EN 1014-1:2010 is part of a series addressing creosote and creosoted timber sampling and analysis:

  • EN 1014-2 - Procedure for obtaining a sample of creosote from creosoted timber.
  • EN 1014-3 - Determination of benzo(a)pyrene content in creosote.
  • EN 1014-4 - Determination of water-extractable phenols content in creosote.

These related standards complement EN 1014-1:2010 by broadening coverage from sampling techniques to specific chemical analyses, fostering comprehensive quality assessment of creosote-treated wood products.
