Overview
EN ISO 1043-4:2021, titled "Plastics - Symbols and abbreviated terms - Part 4: Flame retardants", is a vital international standard maintained by CEN and ISO/TC 61 for plastics identification. This document establishes uniform symbols and codes for flame retardants added to plastic materials, ensuring consistency and clarity in plastics industry communication. It supersedes earlier versions (1999 and 2016 amendments) with updated content relevant to flame retardant substances in plastics.
The standard focuses on providing a comprehensive coding system designed for flame retardants exceeding a 1% mass fraction in plastics. These symbols are used alongside existing symbols from related plastics standards (ISO 1043-1 to 1043-3), enhancing traceability and compliance in material specifications.
Key Topics
Uniform Symbol System:
The standard uses the abbreviated term "FR", followed by a two-digit code in parentheses (e.g., FR(10)) to designate flame retardants. This allows easy and standardized identification on plastic materials and technical documentation.Code Numbers by Chemical Classes:
The codes are organized based on the chemical composition of flame retardants, including:- Halogenated compounds (codes 10 to 29) such as chlorinated, brominated, and fluorinated substances
- Nitrogen compounds (code 30) including melamine derivatives
- Organic phosphorus compounds (40-49), both halogenated and halogen-free
- Inorganic phosphorus compounds (50-59) like ammonium orthophosphates and red phosphorus
- Metal oxides and hydroxides (60-69) such as aluminium hydroxide and antimony oxide
- Boron and zinc compounds (70-79)
- Silica compounds (75-76) including silicones
- Graphite (code 80)
Scope and Application:
Applies to plastics containing flame retardants where the flame retardant comprises more than 1% by mass. The standard supports materials’ identification, regulatory compliance, and communication among manufacturers, regulators, and consumers.Continuous Updates:
EN ISO 1043-4:2021 replaces previous editions and adds new code numbers to reflect developments in flame retardant technologies and regulations.
Applications
Material Identification and Traceability
Standardized flame retardant symbols streamline the identification process on product labels, datasheets, and packaging, facilitating quality control and safe handling.Regulatory Compliance
Manufacturers and suppliers use these symbols to demonstrate adherence to fire safety standards and chemical regulations, improving transparency in the supply chain.Research and Development
Clear identification of flame retardants aids R&D teams in selecting appropriate additives for product safety, performance, and environmental considerations.Quality Assurance and Testing
Testing labs and certification bodies rely on these symbols to ensure plastics meet flame retardant performance criteria.International Trade
Harmonized symbols reduce technical barriers to trade by providing a universally understood system for flame retardant identification in plastics.
