Polimerni materiali - Simboli in kratice - 3. del: Mehčala (ISO 1043-3:2016)

Overview - EN ISO 1043-3:2016 (ISO 1043-3:2016)
EN ISO 1043-3:2016 is the CEN-adopted part of the ISO 1043 series that defines symbols and abbreviated terms for plasticizers used in plastics and rubber industries. The standard provides a uniform system of capital-letter symbols to form abbreviated terms (e.g., DBP, DOP, DINP) so that each plasticizer is identified consistently in technical publications, specifications and product literature. Its purpose is to avoid multiple abbreviated names for the same plasticizer and to make shorthand chemical naming clear and reproducible.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and intent: Defines symbols for components used to build established abbreviated terms for individual plasticizers; mixtures are not covered.
- Symbol rules:
- Only capital letters are used for symbols.
- The first appearance of an abbreviated term in text must be preceded by the full chemical name and the abbreviation in parentheses.
- D is used as the first letter for di-esters; I denotes iso-branched groups; P may be used for phosphate in place of F for “phosphate”.
- Alkyl groups are taken as n-alkyl unless otherwise indicated; phthalates denote esters of o‑phthalic acid unless stated otherwise.
- Special usage notes (e.g., O commonly denotes 2‑ethylhexyl and NO denotes n‑octyl) to reflect industry conventions.
- Terminology and references: Relies on ISO 472 (Plastics - Vocabulary) and ISO 1043-1 for definitions and cross-references.
- Schedule of terms and Annex A: Contains the list of commonly used abbreviated terms, their common names, IUPAC equivalents and CAS Registry Numbers where available; Annex A lists symbols for individual components.
Practical applications and who uses ISO 1043-3
- Plastics and rubber manufacturers: consistent labeling and internal documentation of plasticizers in formulations and data sheets.
- Material specifications and procurement: clear abbreviations in purchase orders and specifications avoid ambiguity.
- Testing and laboratories: standardized shorthand for reporting test results and chemical analyses.
- Regulatory and compliance teams: unambiguous identification of plasticizers (e.g., phthalates, adipates, citrates) supports compliance reporting.
- Technical authors and standards committees: use for uniform terminology in publications, standards and industry guidance.

1 Anwendungsbereich
wichtig.
2.8 Der Kennbuchstabe I kennzeichnet iso-verzweigte Gruppen (z. B. DIOP).
De

The EN ISO 1043-3:2016 standard provides a comprehensive framework for the uniformity of symbols and abbreviated terms specifically related to plasticizers. This document aims to ensure that there is a standardized approach within the industry, preventing confusion that arises from multiple abbreviations for the same plasticizer. Its scope is focused solely on those terms that have achieved established usage, thereby enhancing clarity and consistency in communication among professionals in the plastics field. One of the significant strengths of ISO 1043-3:2016 is its role in streamlining the communication of chemical information. By providing convenient shorthand for the long chemical names commonly used in publications, this standard aids in improving readability and understanding. This is particularly relevant in scientific literature and industry documentation, where precision is crucial. The abbreviated terms defined in this standard not only facilitate quicker comprehension but also promote professionalism in written communications. Furthermore, the relevance of ISO 1043-3:2016 extends beyond just standardization; it also fosters international collaboration within the plastics industry. As companies and researchers increasingly operate on a global scale, having a universally accepted set of symbols and abbreviations for plasticizers enhances mutual understanding. This, in turn, supports innovation and development of new applications and materials within the plastic industry. Overall, the EN ISO 1043-3:2016 standard is a pivotal resource that underpins the effective and efficient exchange of information regarding plasticizers, solidifying its essential role in the industry.
