Overview

FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 is a European standard developed by the CLC that addresses the safety requirements for portable electric immersion heaters used in households and similar environments. This standard applies to immersion heaters rated at voltages not exceeding 250 V, covering typical domestic safety concerns in kitchens and other household settings where such appliances are often used. Its purpose is to minimize risks such as electric shock, fire hazards, and mechanical injuries associated with the use of these appliances.

This document revises and supersedes previous versions (EN 60335-2-74:2003 and amendments), aligning with the most recent general safety provisions in IEC 60335-1 and introducing clearer and updated safety measures. The standard recognizes both everyday and foreseeable misuse scenarios, promoting safety not only for intended users but also for the wider public, including use in light industry, shops, and farms.

Key Topics

The standard covers a range of specific safety topics for portable immersion heaters, including:

  • Scope and Application: Defines household and similar uses, excludes industrial use, battery-operated heaters, and those used in hazardous environments.
  • Marking and Instructions: Portable immersion heaters must be clearly marked with maximum and minimum immersion depths and accompanied by comprehensive instructions for safe use.
  • Electrical Safety: Addresses protection against access to live parts, requirements for insulation, overload protection, and leakage current testing.
  • Mechanical Safety: Focuses on durability through drop tests and mechanical strength requirements to reduce the risk of damage from falls or rough handling.
  • Thermal Safety: Includes provisions for testing heating elements, ensuring safe operation even at high water temperatures, and managing risks associated with residual heat.
  • Moisture Resistance: Requires at least IPX7 protection to prevent water ingress and related hazards.
  • Abnormal Operation: Specifies tests and requirements for heaters designed to maintain set temperatures or prevent water freezing, especially in outdoor environments.
  • Component Requirements: Ensures use of appropriate materials, thermal cut-out features, and specifications for supply cords and terminals.

Applications

The practical value of FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 lies in its ability to guide manufacturers, importers, and testing organizations on the safe design, construction, and labeling of portable electric immersion heaters. Key applications include:

  • Household Water Heating: Safe heating of water for beverages, cooking, or cleaning, preventing risks in kitchens or bathrooms.
  • Animal Care: Keeping water from freezing in animal troughs on farms, ensuring animal welfare and operational continuity.
  • Public and Shared Spaces: Use in shops, offices, and light industry, where electrical safety in communal water heating is essential.
  • Product Testing and Certification: Basis for conformity assessment, product approvals, and CE marking in the European market.

By complying with this standard, manufacturers enhance consumer safety, reduce liability risks, and support harmonized market access within Europe.

Related Standards

Compliance with FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 also means referencing the following related standards, which cover other appliance types or specific technical aspects:

  • IEC 60335-1: Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – General requirements
  • IEC 60335-2-15: Particular requirements for appliances for heating liquids
  • IEC 60335-2-55: Particular requirements for appliances for use with aquariums and garden ponds
  • IEC 60335-2-73: Particular requirements for fixed immersion heaters

These referenced standards help ensure comprehensive electrical and mechanical safety for a broad range of household appliances beyond immersion heaters.

Conclusion

FprEN IEC 60335-2-74:2026 sets essential safety benchmarks for portable immersion heaters in Europe. By adhering to this standard, the industry supports domestic safety, product reliability, and regulatory compliance for small electrical appliances widely used in households, agriculture, and small business environments.

Part 2-74: Particular requirements for portable immersion heaters

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
IEC 60335-2-74 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 61: Safety of household and
similar electrical appliances. It is an International Standard.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2002, Amendment 1:
2006 and Amendment 2:2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous
edition:
a) the text has been aligned with IEC 60335-1:2020;
b) some notes have been converted to normative text (Clause 1, 7.1);
c) requirements for appliances that maintain a liquid at a set temperature are added (19.1,
30.2).
