Overview
EN 60335-2-41:2003/A2:2010 is the CENELEC-adopted amendment (A2) to the European safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances - particular requirements for pumps. It aligns with IEC 60335-2-41:2002/A2:2009 and supplements EN 60335-2-41:2003. The amendment was approved by CENELEC on 2010-02-01 and mandates national implementation and withdrawal dates for conflicting standards. This standard is a product-family (part 2) standard that works together with IEC 60335-1 (Part 1 general requirements).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and status
- Applies to safety of household and similar electrical pumps; where Part 2 does not add requirements, Part 1 applies.
- Product-family standard takes precedence over horizontal/generic standards covering the same hazards.
- Supply connection / flexible cords
- Supply cord length for submersible pumps (except class III pumps, aquarium pumps and table-fountain pumps): the cord must be at least 3 m longer than the maximum operating depth marked on the pump.
- Resistance to heat and fire (Clause 30)
- Clause 30 of Part 1 applies except where modified by this amendment.
- 30.2.2 is not applicable for all pumps.
- 30.2.3 is not applicable to submersible pumps if:
- live parts are completely contained within a metal or porcelain enclosure, and
- the instructions require the pump to be supplied through a residual current device (RCD) with a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA.
- Human factors and warnings
- Clarifies protection measures for users, including persons (children or those with reduced capabilities) who may need supervision or instruction.
- Bibliography additions
- ISO 13732-1 (ergonomics - assessment of human responses to contact with hot surfaces) is referenced and harmonized as EN ISO 13732-1.
Applications and users
- Who uses it:
- Manufacturers of household and domestic pumps (including submersible and surface pumps)
- Product safety engineers and designers to ensure compliance during development
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing type and safety testing
- Regulatory and procurement professionals specifying safe electrical pump products
- Typical applications:
- Household water pumps, garden pumps, submersible domestic pumps, and other similar consumer pump appliances where electrical safety, cord length and RCD protection are relevant.
Related standards
- IEC 60335-2-41 (base international standard)
- IEC/EN 60335-1 (general requirements for household electrical appliances)
