EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 is a CENELEC European Standard for measuring airborne acoustical noise from dry vacuum cleaners. It specifies the test code for mains-operated and cordless dry vacuum cleaners, including accessories and docking stations, so results can be measured and reported in a consistent way for household and similar use.

The document is the European adoption of IEC 60704-2-1:2026 without modification. It is intended to be read together with the general requirements in EN IEC 60704-1:2021.

What does EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 specify?

EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 specifies how to determine the airborne acoustical noise of dry vacuum cleaners on carpet and hard floor. It covers appliances for household use or similar use, including accessories and docking stations.

The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, measurement methods and acoustical environments, instrumentation, operation and location of the appliance under test, sound pressure level measurement, calculation of sound pressure and sound power levels, and reporting. Annex ZA gives the normative references and their European publications, and Annex A is titled Standard test table.

What are the key requirements of EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026?

EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 sets the test conditions that make noise results comparable between laboratories. The main practical point is that the appliance, the surface, the settings, and the measurement method all have to match the document closely.

Scope and test surfaces

The standard applies to mains-operated and cordless dry vacuum cleaners, including accessories and docking stations. For wet and dry vacuum cleaners, the dry cleaning function is tested here, while the wet cleaning function is covered by IEC 60704-2-20.

Noise is measured under normal operating conditions on carpet and hard floor in line with IEC 62885-2. For a product designed for both floor types, results are determined separately for carpet and hard floor, so the report can reflect real use.

Measurement methods and environment

Clause 4 allows both direct and comparison methods, and the document points to ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2, and ISO 3744 as acceptable measurement environments. If the source emits audible discrete tones, extra microphone or source positions may be needed. In practice, this means the laboratory has to watch for tones that can change the measured spread of results.

If an operator is needed during the test, the operator is treated as part of the test environment. The same operator position is then used during the reverberation time or comparison measurement, which helps keep the setup repeatable.

Preparation, operation, and settings

Clause 6 requires specific pre-conditioning. New mains-operated cleaners are run with unrestricted air flow before first test, new cordless cleaners are fully charged and then discharged in the test setting, and docking stations are run through repeated cycles before noise testing.

The standard also fixes how the appliance is set up for testing. Manufacturers' instructions are followed first; if they are unclear, visible product markings are used; if the setting is still ambiguous, the manufacturer is contacted; and if that still does not resolve it, maximum continuous airflow is used. For a test lab, this means the chosen setting must be defensible and fully recorded.

Surface-specific placement

Clause 6 distinguishes carpet and hard floor placement. On carpet, the appliance is centered on a standard Wilton test carpet, with the pile direction and handle position controlled. Active nozzles are tested on glued carpet to avoid noise from carpet vibration, while passive nozzles are not glued.

On hard floor, the appliance is centered on a standard hard floor, and the document gives surface properties and alternatives such as marble or similar stone plates when needed. Docking stations are placed in the center of the test area on the standard hard floor. These rules matter because small changes in placement can change the measured noise.

Measurement, calculation, and reporting

Clause 7 uses a 30 s time-average for the A-weighted sound pressure level of a dry vacuum cleaner. For docking stations, the highest A-weighted time-averaged sound pressure level over 2.5 s is measured across operating modes.

Clause 8 states that the final results for dry vacuum cleaners are the sound power levels for carpet and hard floor, determined separately, and averaged energetically if there are multiple measurements. Clause 10 requires reporting of the cleaning head type, carpet version and batch, hard floor type, cleaning head settings, and the state of openings used to reduce suction power.

What terms does EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 define?

EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 defines several terms that are central to the test setup.

  • Dry vacuum cleaner - an electrically operated appliance that removes dry material by air flow and returns cleaned air to the ambient air.
  • Wet and dry vacuum cleaner - an appliance designed to remove liquid in addition to dry material.
  • Cleaning head - the nozzle, brush, power nozzle, or similar part that contacts the surface being cleaned.
  • Active nozzle - a cleaning head with a driven agitation device to help remove dirt.
  • Standard Wilton test carpet - the specified carpet used when measuring on carpet.
  • Standard hard floor - the hard floor used when measuring on hard floor.
  • Docking station - a base unit that can charge, remove dust, process data, or provide other support functions.

Who uses EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026?

EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 is used by appliance manufacturers, test laboratories, and certification bodies working with household and similar electrical appliances. Quality managers and buyers use it when they need a consistent noise test method for dry vacuum cleaners.

It is especially relevant to the surface-cleaning appliance sector, including products with carpet and hard floor modes, cordless products, and vacuum cleaners with docking stations. It is also useful for technical committees and national committees that need a harmonized European test code.

What changed in EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 from the previous edition?

EN IEC 60704-2-1:2026 is the fifth edition and replaces the 2020 edition. The foreword states that it is a technical revision.

The listed significant changes are:

4 Measurement methods and acoustical environments
4.2 Direct method
Addition:
If audible discrete tones are present in the noise emitted by the source, the estimated standard
deviation of the measured sound pressure levels in the special reverberation room can increase.
In such cases, additional microphone positions or source positions can be necessary, as
specified in ISO 3743-2.
If an operator is necessary, it is considered as part of the test environment. Therefore, the
operator shall be present also during the reverberation time measurement with the RSS. The
position of the operator shall be approximately at the same position as in the measurement with
the test sample.
