Overview
EN IEC 63474:2023 (adopted by CLC/CENELEC from IEC 63474:2023) defines standardized methods to measure and report networked standby power consumption for electrical and electronic household and office edge equipment. The standard targets devices with wired or wireless network ports that can be remotely reactivated (remotely initiated triggers). It complements existing standby measurement standards (e.g., EN 50564 / IEC 62301) by focusing specifically on networked standby behaviour, power management testing, and verification of wireless connection deactivation. The standard does not apply to interconnecting equipment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Measurement scope: Procedures for measuring electrical power consumption in networked standby for edge equipment and how to report results.
- Power management testing: Methods to exercise and measure device power management and reactivation behaviour, including reactivation triggers.
- Wireless connection management: Procedures to test whether wireless network connections can be deactivated and to verify active/inactive wireless states.
- Measurement conditions and instrumentation: Requirements for test room, power supply, power measuring instruments, measurement uncertainty, and common test conditions.
- Network configuration: Guidance on preparing and configuring network ports (wired and wireless) for tests, and test sequences for connected vs disconnected ports.
- Reporting: Required test report content, including laboratory details, product information, test parameters, network configurations, and measured data.
- Annexes and examples: Normative and informative annexes cover connection-type test conditions, equipment classification, network technology examples, user information, and a sample test report template.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of household and office electronics (smart appliances, smart speakers, printers, IoT edge devices) use the standard to characterize and optimize networked standby power.
- Test laboratories and compliance bodies adopt the measurement procedures for consistent, repeatable testing and certification.
- Product designers and energy engineers use results to improve power management, reduce standby energy use, and comply with energy labeling/regulatory requirements.
- Regulators and procurement teams reference standardized metrics when setting limits or evaluating products for energy efficiency programs.
Related standards
- EN 50564 / IEC 62301 - Measurement of low power/standby (complements EN IEC 63474 for non-networked standby).
- IEC 63474:2023 - International text adopted as EN IEC 63474:2023.
EN IEC 63474:2023 is essential for anyone needing accurate, repeatable measurement of networked standby power in edge equipment and for improving the energy profile of connected consumer and office devices.

The standard EN IEC 63474:2023 delineates a comprehensive framework for measuring the electrical power consumption of edge equipment during networked standby. This standard is particularly relevant in the context of rising energy efficiency concerns and a growing demand for sustainable practices in both household and office environments. One of the strengths of this standard is its specific focus on networked standby power consumption, addressing a critical area often overlooked in previous standards. By honing in on the measurement of electrical power in this category, it offers valuable methodologies that facilitate accurate reporting of power consumption metrics, which ultimately aids in reducing energy wastage. Additionally, EN IEC 63474:2023 includes guidelines for assessing power management features, effectively guiding users in determining the feasibility of deactivating wireless network connections. This aspect is significant as it empowers users and manufacturers to enhance the power efficiency of their devices further. The relevance of this standard is underscored by its connection to EN 50564, which addresses standby power consumption outside of networked environments. This relationship ensures cohesive standards across different power consumption scenarios, promoting a more unified approach to energy management. By focusing on edge equipment, and with a robust methodology for measurement and management of standby power consumption, EN IEC 63474:2023 stands as a crucial standard in helping mitigate energy use in increasingly connected living and working spaces.
