General Information
Overview
EN 60512-1-3:1997 (IEC 60512-1-3) - “Electromechanical components for electronic equipment - Part 1: General examination - Section 3: Test 1c - Electrical engagement length” is a standardized test method for measuring the electrical engagement length of connectors. Adopted by CLC/EN, this section defines how to determine the point during mating when electrical contact is first established and the total length of electrical engagement up to full mating.
Key topics and requirements
- Objective: Provide a repeatable method to measure the distance over which contacts are electrically engaged during connector mating (as defined in IEV 581‑03‑15).
- Specimen preparation:
- Fixed part mounted as in normal service; free part on a fixture permitting distance measurement.
- Wiring and mounting per the detail specification.
- Special provision: if a female contact has a protective sleeve that is not current-carrying, ensure the test makes contact with the pressure member, not the sleeve.
- Test circuit and measurement:
- Simple continuity circuit (illustrated in the standard) using a 10 V d.c. source and the test current adjusted to 100 mA.
- Close switch, set current to 100 mA, open switch, then mate connector at the specified rate.
- The zero point is where the circuit first closes (first electrical contact). Measure travel from zero point to full mating; this difference is the electrical engagement length.
- Pass/fail requirement: Measured engagement length must be not less than the minimum value specified in the detail specification.
- Details to specify (when invoking the test): number of specimens, wiring, mounting, rate of mating, minimum electrical engagement length, and any deviations from the standard method.
Applications and users
- Connector and contact manufacturers verifying contact geometry and mating performance.
- R&D and mechanical/electrical design engineers assessing mating behavior and contact reliability.
- Test laboratories performing connector qualification and compliance testing.
- Procurement and quality assurance specifying minimum engagement lengths in product detail specifications.
- Useful for product families where reliable electrical contact during mating travel is critical (automotive, telecoms, aerospace, industrial connectors).

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
