FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 is the Part 2-24 standard for luminaires with limited surface temperatures, published here through CLC in the IEC luminaires series. It specifies safety requirements for luminaires intended to limit surface temperatures in dusty locations, so it is relevant to manufacturers, test labs, specifiers, quality teams, and buyers selecting luminaires for those environments.
What does FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 specify?
FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 sets particular requirements for luminaires that use limited surface temperatures to reduce ignition risks from combustible dust or from material deposits on the luminaire. It applies to luminaires using electric light sources on supply voltages up to 1 000 V.
The document excludes luminaires for explosive gas atmospheres and explosive dust atmospheres. It is organized as a Part 2 document that works with IEC 60598-1, then adds clauses for classification, marking, construction, thermal testing, and connection details.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex AAA | Informative schedule of amended clauses containing more serious or critical requirements that may require retesting |
Main structure:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - Normative references
- Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 - General requirements
- Clause 5 - Classification
- Clause 6 - Marking
- Clause 7 - Construction
- Clauses 8 to 13 - Wiring, earthing, electric shock protection, dust/moisture resistance, insulation, creepage distances and clearances
- Clause 14 - Endurance and thermal tests
- Clause 15 - Resistance to heat, fire and tracking
- Clauses 16 to 17 - Terminals and electrical connections
What are the key requirements of FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026?
FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 focuses on keeping external surfaces cool enough in service and on making the intended use clear to installers. The practical result is that the luminaire has to be selected, marked, installed, and tested for the dusty location it is meant for.
Classification and intended use
Clause 5.101 classifies luminaires by the location they are intended for. The classification links the luminaire to dust conditions and to the relevant wiring rules, so the user must match the product to the site conditions instead of treating all dusty areas the same.
Marking and instructions
Clause 6 requires a symbol for luminaires with limited surface temperatures, and that symbol must remain visible after installation and with the lamp in place. The manufacturer’s instructions must identify the intended location, mounting positions, and use locations, because those details determine which surfaces can become dust-collecting upward-facing surfaces.
If mounting can create upward-facing external surfaces, the instructions must call for regular cleaning of dust deposits. In practice, this tells the installer and maintenance team where dust control is needed to keep surface temperatures within limits.
Enclosure protection and thermal design
Clause 7 requires an enclosure with the appropriate IP protection for dust conditions, and the protection includes the light source. The luminaire must also be constructed so that its permissible external surface temperatures are not exceeded.
Built-in control gear and other built-in devices must either be thermally protected with a temperature marking limit or be designed so that their failure will not push the upward-facing surfaces beyond the permitted limit. Where that protection is not provided by marking, the relevant built-in devices are tested in the luminaire under fault conditions.
Thermal testing and temperature limits
Clause 14 covers normal operation, abnormal operation, and failed-winding conditions. The key practical point is that upward-facing external surfaces are held to a stricter temperature limit than other external surfaces, and the same upward-facing limit applies in abnormal operation.
For certain fault cases in control gear, the clause requires the upward-facing external surfaces to remain within their permitted limit during the fault test. That matters to buyers and inspectors because the luminaire has to stay safe not only when operating normally but also under foreseeable failure conditions.
Clause order and existing products
Clause 4.102 sets the order in which the clauses are applied, which helps users follow the document in the correct sequence. Clause 4.101 also gives a transition rule for luminaires already assessed to the previous edition, allowing review against the amended clauses listed in Annex AAA.
What terms does FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 define?
- dust - Small solid particles in air that settle under their own weight but can stay suspended for a time.
- conductive dust - Combustible dust with low electrical resistance, which increases the need for enclosure protection.
- explosive gas atmosphere - A gas or vapour mixture with air that can keep flame propagation going after ignition.
- explosive dust atmosphere - A dust, fibre, or flying mixture with air that can keep flame propagation going after ignition.
- upward facing external surface - An external surface that can collect dust because of the mounting position and therefore needs thermal limitation.
- combustible - Capable of being ignited and burned.
Who uses FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026?
This standard is used by luminaire manufacturers, test laboratories, conformity assessment teams, and technical specifiers working with dusty environments. It is also relevant to buyers and quality managers who need to check whether a luminaire is suitable for a location where dust accumulation or dust coating could create a fire risk.
Installers and maintenance teams use it indirectly through the manufacturer’s instructions, especially for mounting positions, installation location, and cleaning of dust deposits. Safety and compliance teams use it to decide whether a luminaire is appropriate for agricultural, industrial, or other dust-related locations covered by the referenced wiring rules.
What changed in FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 from the previous edition?
This document replaces the second edition published in 2013 and is described as a technical revision. The stated changes are:
- clause numbers and structure aligned with IEC 60598-1
- improved terms and definitions
- more detailed classification of luminaires
- indication of mounting positions and use locations
- thermal protection of built-in control gear and other built-in devices required
Annex AAA adds that no requirements in this document are considered more onerous than in the previous edition.
Which standards are used with FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026?
- IEC 60598-1 - The general requirements and tests base document used together with this Part 2-24.
- IEC 60364-4-42 - Used for protection against thermal effects and for identifying dust-related installation environments.
- IEC 60364-7-705 - Used for requirements for agricultural and horticultural premises, including a location class with fire risk from combustible dust coating.
- ISO 4225:1994 - Provides the air-quality vocabulary used for the definition of dust.
- IEC 61347-1 - Used for the fault-condition test referenced when built-in control gear or other built-in devices are not thermally protected by marking.
What does the FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 document contain?
FprEN IEC 60598-2-24:2026 contains a symbol for marking luminaires with limited surface temperatures, plus clauses for classification, marking, construction, thermal testing, and terminal arrangements. It also includes the clause sequence that controls how Part 1 and this Part 2-24 are applied together.
The document gives the instructions that manufacturers must provide for intended locations and mounting positions, because those instructions determine which surfaces become upward-facing and may need cleaning. It also includes the thermal test framework for normal operation, abnormal operation, and fault conditions.
Annex AAA lists amended clauses that may need retesting when products are reviewed against this revision.
