Aeronautical ground lighting electrical installation - Flashing lights: Equipment specifications and tests

This prestandard specifies general requirements for classification of flashing light systems used on airports or for ground based aviation lighting systems, for the luminaries, for the control cabinets and for their mechanical and electrical construction erection, together with the related tests. This prestandard is applicable to flashing light systems used for: - Sequential flashing approach lighting systems; - Runway threshold identification lights; - Runway lead-in lighting systems; - Medium and high intensity obstruction lighting systems. Alternately flashing lights used as runway guard lights are excluded from this prestandard. Attention is drawn to the fact that this prestandard covers all aspects of safety (electrical, thermal and mechanical). The purpose of this prestandard is to provide a set of requirements and tests which are applicable to the luminaries and their control equipment. In general, this prestandard covers safety requirements for all components of the system.

IEC 61821:2011 applies to the maintenance of AGL constant current series circuits. This International Standard: - covers constant current series circuits for AGL installed at aerodromes and heliports; - concentrates on providing the safety requirements for the maintenance of an AGL constant current series circuit. This standard should be applied where appropriate for these CCRs. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2002. It is a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) revision and update of terms and definitions; b) addition of new paragraphs, such as 'Nominal output current range and tolerances'; c) modification of some paragraphs, such as those related to 'Local control' and 'Remote control'; d) deletion of some paragraphs, in particular 'Power transformers' and 'Output current indicator'.

This standard specifies the characteristics of aeronautical ground lighting series trans-formers (AGLST) used in aeronautical ground lighting for 6,6 A series circuits, at a service voltage of up to 5 kV, supplied by constant current regulators up to 30 kVA in rating. AGL series transformers provide power to airport lighting luminaires or other loads (resistive) from their secondary circuits. The AGL series transformers provide continuity of the series circuit in the event of a loss of the load on the transformer, and electrical isolation between the primary circuit supplied by a constant current regulator, and the secondary circuit connected to the load under conditions defined in this standard.
