EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 is a CLC European safety standard for floor treatment machines and wet scrubbing machines used in household and similar applications. It sets particular safety requirements for electric appliances up to 250 V, including DC-supplied and battery-operated models, so manufacturers, test labs, and buyers can judge whether a machine belongs in this product family and how it should be assessed.
What does EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 specify?
EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 specifies safety requirements for electric floor treatment and wet scrubbing machines intended for household and similar purposes. It covers the appliance types named in the scope, excludes several other cleaning-machine categories, and is organized as a Part 2 standard that supplements the general requirements of Part 1.
The scope includes floor buffers, floor polishers and floor waxers, as well as floor scrubbers, rug shampooers and upholstery shampooers. It also covers similar appliances used outside the home when they may still present a danger to the public, such as equipment used by laymen in shops, hotels, offices, schools, hospitals, light industry and farms.
The document follows the IEC 60335 structure with Clauses 1 to 32, plus Annex C and a bibliography. The clauses cover the usual safety topics for household appliances - marking, access to live parts, heating, moisture resistance, abnormal operation, stability, construction, wiring, insulation, heat and fire, rusting, and radiation-related hazards.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex C | Ageing test on motors |
What are the key requirements of EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026?
EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 sets the product-specific tests and construction rules that turn the general Part 1 requirements into rules for floor treatment machines and wet scrubbing machines. The most useful points in practice are the instructions, temperature limits, moisture test conditions, abnormal-operation checks, stability rules, and the extra anti-starting measure for some single-disc machines.
Instructions and user information
Clause 7.12 requires instructions for appliances with rotating brushes to warn that the supply cord can be run over, and instructions for appliances with a liquid dispensing system to state the amount and type of liquid to use. The instructions must also tell the user to remove the plug from the socket-outlet before cleaning or maintenance. In practice, this means the manufacturer has to give clear, task-specific warnings and service steps, not just general safety text.
Heating and external surface temperatures
Clause 11 adds a special temperature measurement method for suitable flat external surfaces, using the probe in Figure 101 with a defined contact force and contact time. It also adds Table 101, which sets maximum temperature rises for specified external surfaces under normal operating conditions. For designers and test labs, this matters because portable and hand-held appliances are checked against explicit surface-temperature limits, not only internal heating criteria.
Moisture resistance
Clause 15.2 adds a specific moisture test for liquid containers and wet scrubbing machines. The text describes how to position containers, how to fill them, and how to run the appliance under normal operation with defined movement rates and water levels. This is important because the appliance family is used with liquids, so the test checks spill and overturn conditions that are realistic for daily use.
Abnormal operation and moving parts
Clause 19 adds an abnormal-operation run of 30 s in one case and requires operation without brushes in contact with any surface in another. Clause 20 also modifies the stability and mechanical-hazard checks so that appliances held in the hand during normal use while supported by the cleaning surface are not subjected to the stability test. For users and assessors, this means the document treats brush drive, contact with the surface, and hand-held support as safety-relevant design features.
Starting prevention and inadvertent operation
Clause 22.101 requires appliances with single-disc brushes and a rated power input above 300 W to have means, in addition to the motor switch, that prevent starting. The clause also accepts certain biased-off switch arrangements and requires the prevention means to withstand 6,000 operations and remain fit for use. In practice, the machine must be designed so that it does not start unintentionally during handling, storage, or brush changes.
Insulation environment and fire-related construction
Clause 29.2 sets the microenvironment as pollution degree 3 unless the insulation is enclosed or otherwise protected from pollution in normal use. Clause 30.2 states that 30.2.2 applies for these appliances. This tells designers which insulation environment to assume and which heat-and-fire construction check applies.
Ageing of motors
Annex C gives the ageing test on motors and modifies the parameter p in Table C.1. That matters for motor selection and endurance evidence, because the motor ageing assessment is part of showing that the appliance remains safe over time.
What terms does EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 define?
EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 uses terms that are central to the product family and its test conditions. A few of the most important are:
- Floor treatment machine - An appliance such as a floor buffer, floor polisher or floor waxer used to treat hard floor surfaces.
- Wet scrubbing machine - An appliance such as a floor scrubber, rug shampooer or upholstery shampooer that works with water or liquid cleaning action.
- Direct current (DC) - The supply type included in the scope alongside normal mains-fed appliances.
- Part 1 - IEC 60335-1, the general safety standard that this Part 2 modifies and supplements.
- Biased-off switch - A switch arrangement used in Clause 22.101 to reduce the risk of inadvertent starting.
- Pollution degree 3 - The insulation environment assumed in Clause 29.2 unless the insulation is protected from contamination.
- Normal operation - The operating condition used for tests, including the defined movement rates and surfaces described for each appliance type.
Who uses EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026?
EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 is used by manufacturers of household and similar cleaning appliances, safety engineers, test laboratories, certification bodies, and quality managers. It is also relevant to buyers and product specifiers who need to know whether a floor treatment machine or wet scrubbing machine belongs in this safety category and what evidence should exist for marking, instructions, moisture resistance, temperature rise, and mechanical safety.
The standard is especially relevant in appliance design, conformity assessment, and product testing. It helps teams decide what to test, how to set up the test, and what construction features are expected before a product is placed on the market.
What changed in EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 from the previous edition?
The underlying IEC text states that the sixth edition cancels and replaces the fifth edition published in 2002 and Amendment 1:2008, and that it is a technical revision. The listed changes are:
- alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020;
- conversion of some notes into normative text;
- addition of limits on temperature rise of external accessible surfaces;
- relocation of the cord reel modification to align with Part 1;
- modification of the resistance-to-moisture test;
- clarification of the stability test.
Which standards are used with EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026?
EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 is used with IEC 60335-1, which provides the general safety requirements that Part 2-10 supplements and modifies. It also adds IEC 60584-1 as a normative reference for the thermocouple specifications and tolerances used with the surface-temperature probe in Figure 101.
The document also names related cleaning-appliance parts for context and boundaries: IEC 60335-2-2 for vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances, IEC 60335-2-67 for commercial floor treatment machines, and IEC 60335-2-72 for commercial floor treatment machines with or without traction drive. These references help users separate this household-and-similar standard from other appliance families.
What does the EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 document contain?
EN IEC 60335-2-10:2026 contains the full clause structure for safety assessment, from scope and definitions through construction, wiring, insulation, and environmental hazards. It also contains the product-specific test set-ups for normal operation, including the defined movement rates and surfaces for floor treatment machines, floor scrubbers, rug shampooers and upholstery shampooers.
The document includes Figure 101, which shows the probe used for measuring external surface temperatures, and Table 101, which gives the maximum temperature-rise limits for specified external surfaces. It also includes Clause 22.101’s starting-prevention test and Annex C’s motor ageing test, both of which are directly relevant to product design validation and conformity testing.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
