Overview

EN 60335-2-10:2003/A1:2008 is a European safety standard specifying particular requirements for household and similar electrical appliances designed for floor treatment, including floor treatment machines and wet scrubbing machines. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) under the auspices of IEC Technical Committee 61, this amendment (A1) complements and modifies the original EN 60335-2-10:2003 standard to address updated safety concerns and broaden the scope related to user protection. It ensures these electrical appliances meet stringent safety criteria to protect users from hazards related to electrical, mechanical, and thermal causes.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements
The standard defines essential safety criteria covering electrical insulation, protection against electric shock, mechanical strength, stability, and prevention of fire and injury risks specifically tailored for floor treatment and wet scrubbing machines.

  • User Protection
Emphasizes safeguards for vulnerable persons including children and users with reduced physical, sensory, or mental faculties, or lacking sufficient experience, ensuring appliances can be safely used under supervision or with instructions.

  • Application Scope
Addresses household appliances and similar machines designed for floor care, focusing on those requiring particular features due to their wet operation or scrubbing functions.

  • Reference to Other Standards
Stipulates that general safety requirements from Part 1 of IEC 60335 apply unless specifically overridden by this part. Additionally, it integrates ergonomic considerations such as thermal surface evaluations based on ISO 13732-1, ensuring heat exposure is managed safely.

  • Amendment Highlights
The A1 amendment revises scope limitations and clarifies definitions of protected user groups, incorporating learnings from recent industrial and technical committee discussions to ensure comprehensive application and enforcement.

Applications

This standard is critical for manufacturers, testing organizations, and regulatory bodies involved with:

  • Floor Treatment Machines
Such as polishers, buffers, and polish-maintenance machines used in residential and commercial spaces.

  • Wet Scrubbing Machines
Devices that use water or cleaning solutions to scrub and clean hard floor surfaces in households and similar environments.

  • Product Development and Compliance
Assists manufacturers in designing electrical floor cleaning appliances that are compliant with European and international safety requirements, facilitating market access across CENELEC member countries.

  • Safety Testing and Certification
Provides test criteria for conformity assessment bodies to verify that appliances meet the required safety standards before being released to market.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1 - General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances.
  • IEC 60335-2-10 (International) - The corresponding international standard governing the same appliance types.
  • ISO 13732-1 - Ergonomics of the thermal environment, methods for the assessment of human responses to contact with hot surfaces, referenced for thermal safety considerations.
  • Additional Part 2 standards under IEC 60335 series addressing specific appliance categories beyond floor treatment equipment.

Compliance with EN 60335-2-10:2003/A1:2008 ensures that floor treatment and wet scrubbing machines meet the latest European safety requirements, enhance user protection, and maintain market competitiveness throughout Europe. The standard promotes harmonized safety practices and contributes to consumer confidence in household electrical products designed for floor care.
