Overview

EN 61029-2-5:2011 (CLC) is the European safety standard for transportable motor‑operated band saws. It is Part 2-5 of the EN 61029 series and is intended to be used together with EN 61029-1:2009 (general requirements). The standard sets particular safety requirements, tests and user information for band saws to reduce mechanical, electrical, noise and dust hazards. The published Part 2-5 text specifies applicability limits for transportable band saws (saw band length and band wheel diameter) and contains modifications to the international IEC text to align with European requirements.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and definitions - Applies to transportable band saws and defines terms such as “band saw” and “normal load.”
  • Guarding and interlocks - Band wheels, drive mechanism and the non‑cutting area of the saw band must be enclosed by fixed and/or interlocked movable guards. It must be impossible to start the tool when an interlocked guard is open; access tests use the Part 1 test finger and additional probes.
  • Run‑down time / safeguarding - For saws with interlocked guards the saw band run‑down time shall either be less than 2 s or be shorter than the time required to open the guard (guard lock solutions accepted). A specified endurance test uses 2 500 cycles and checks run‑down times.
  • Band guiding and adjustment - Requirements for upper and lower band guides and the maximum clearance of the upper guide above the table (adjustable down to a specified height).
  • Marking and user information - Mandatory markings (rotation direction for three‑phase tools, warnings about disconnecting supply before maintenance) and detailed instructions covering safe operation, band selection, tensioning/tracking, dust collection, use of push sticks, handling and transport.
  • Noise and vibration - Measurement and information requirements; specific noise test conditions for band saws (e.g., test material and cut cycle) are given in the standard.
  • Dust handling - Users must be instructed to connect the saw to a dust‑collecting device when sawing wood; Annex ZD covers dust measurement.
  • Mechanical and electrical tests - Clauses reference insulation, leakage current, endurance, abnormal operation and other electrical safety and mechanical strength checks.

Applications and Who Uses It

  • Manufacturers - design and certify transportable band saws to meet EN 61029-2-5 for CE marking and market access in Europe.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors - perform the specified mechanical, electrical, noise and run‑down tests.
  • Compliance and safety engineers - integrate requirements into product safety files and risk assessments.
  • Procurement and maintenance teams - use the standard to specify safe features (guards, interlocks, dust extraction) and operation/maintenance instructions.
  • Notified bodies / regulators - verify conformity with the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) essential requirements referenced by the standard.

Related Standards

  • EN 61029-1:2009 (General requirements for transportable tools)
  • EN ISO 12100 (Risk assessment and design principles)
  • EN ISO 11688-1 (Noise reduction guidance)

Foreword
This document (EN 61029-2-5:2011) consists of the text of IEC 61029-2-5:1993 and its
amendment 1:2001, prepared by IEC/TC 116 "Safety of motor-operated electric tools", together
with the common modifications prepared by the CLC/TC 116, "Safety of motor-operated
electric tools"
The following dates are fixed:
– latest date by which the existence of the EN

has to be announced at national level
(doa) 2012-04-10
– latest date by which the EN has to be implemented

at national level by publication of an identical

national standard or by endorsement

– latest date by which the national standards conflicting

with the EN have to be withdrawn
(dow) 2014-10-10
This document supersedes EN 61029-2-5:2002.
The main changes with respect to EN 61029-2-5:2002 are in 7.13 (improved wording) and in
Clause 18 (Stability and mechanical hazards). Additionally, dust measurement is now handled
in the new Annex ZD instead of 13.1. These changes aim to adapt EN 61029-2-5 to EN 61029-
1:2009 and to MD (2006/42/EC).
In this document the common modifications to the International Standard are indicated by a
vertical line in the left margin of the text.
This European Standard is divided into two parts:
Part 1 General requirements that are common to most transportable electric motor operated
tools (for the purpose of this standard referred to simply as tools) which could come
within the scope of this standard;
Part 2 Requirements for particular types of tool which either supplement or modify the
requirements given in Part 1 to account for the particular hazards and characteristics of
these specific tools.
This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN/CENELEC by the
European Commission and the European Free Trade Association and covers essential
requirements of EC Directive 2006/42/EC. See Annex ZZ.
Compliance with the relevant clauses of Part 1 together with this Part 2 provides one means of
conforming with the specified essential health and safety requirements of the Directives.
This European Standard follows the overall requirements of EN ISO 12100.
For noise and vibration, this European Standard covers the requirements for their
measurement, the provision of information arising from these measurements and the provision
of information about the personal protective equipment required. Specific requirements for the
reduction of the risk arising from noise and vibration through the design of the tool are not
given as this reflects the current state of the art.
Warning: Other requirements arising from other EC Directives can be applicable to the
products falling within the scope of this standard.

– 3 – EN 61029-2-5:2011
This Part 2-5 is to be used in conjunction with EN 61029-1:2009. This Part 2-5 supplements or
modifies the corresponding clauses of EN 61029-1, so as to convert it into the European
Standard: "Safety requirements for transportable band saws".
Where a particular subclause of Part 1 is not mentioned in this Part 2-5, that subclause applies
as far as is reasonable. Where this Part 2-5 states "addition", "modification" or "replacement",
the relevant text of Part 1 is to be adapted accordingly.
Subclauses, tables and figures which are additional to those in Part 1 are numbered starting
from 101. Subclauses, tables and figures which are additional to those in IEC 61029-2-5 are
prefixed "Z".
NOTE In this standard the following print types are used:
- Requirements proper;
- Test specifications;
- Explanatory matter.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the
subject of patent rights. CENELEC [and/or CEN] shall not be held responsible for identifying
any or all such patent rights.
