EN IEC 62271-201:2026 is the CENELEC European Standard for prefabricated AC solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to and including 52 kV. It specifies how these indoor assemblies are rated, designed, tested, marked, and selected, with a focus on assemblies intended for areas limited to authorized personnel. In practice, it is the document to use when you need the rules for enclosure protection, earthing, accessibility, service continuity, internal arc performance, and the associated verification tests.

What does EN IEC 62271-201:2026 specify?

EN IEC 62271-201:2026 applies to prefabricated solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear assemblies for alternating current, service frequencies up to and including 60 Hz, indoor installation, and locations limited to authorized personnel. The assembly may include air-insulated compartments, fluid-filled compartments, or both, and components inside the assembly can be governed by this part in addition to, or in some cases instead of, their individual product standards.

The document is organized into 13 clauses. Clauses 1 to 8 cover scope, normative references, terms, service conditions, ratings, design and construction, type tests, and routine tests. Clauses 9 to 13 provide selection guidance, information for enquiries and orders, transport and maintenance information, safety, and environmental aspects.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AInternal arc fault test method for verifying internal arc classification (IAC)
Annex BPartial discharge measurement
Annex CRegional deviations
Annex DHumidity test
Annex EProtection categories

Annex HPressure coordination chart for gas-filled compartments

What are the key requirements of EN IEC 62271-201:2026?

Ratings and service conditions

Clause 4 says EN IEC 62271-201:2026 is designed for normal indoor service conditions unless another condition is specified. If a project faces more severe condensation or pollution, the standard points to IEC TS 62271-304 class 1 or class 2 as a way to describe that service environment. For a buyer or specifier, this means the installation conditions must be stated clearly up front, not assumed.

Clause 5 sets the ratings that have to be declared, including rated voltage, insulation level, frequency, continuous current, short-time withstand current, peak withstand current, short-circuit duration, auxiliary/control supply values, cable test voltages, and internal arc classification (IAC). It also adds ratings for earthing circuits and, where relevant, the earthing function through the main switching device. In practice, this is the data set used to match the assembly to the system duty and fault level.

Design, enclosure, and accessibility

Clause 6 requires safe earthing arrangements for the high-voltage conductive parts, the enclosure, and withdrawable or removable parts. Clause 6.101 also requires safe operation for normal use, including tasks such as checking voltage presence, earthing cables, and discharging trapped electrostatic charges. For users, this means the assembly must support the operating steps that are expected during commissioning, service, and maintenance without exposing people to live parts.

Clause 6.102 deals with the solid insulating enclosure and its protection categories, including PA, PB1, and PB2. Clause 6.11 requires durable nameplates with the key ratings and declarations, including LSC, IAC, accessible sides, arc fault current and duration, and relevant filling or alarm levels. This matters because the nameplate is the quick-reference record for installation, operation, and later inspection.

Clause 6.12 sets interlocking and locking expectations. It requires mechanical and electrical sequencing so that switching devices, disconnectors, earthing switches, and removable parts cannot be operated in unsafe positions. Clause 6.13 adds position indication requirements, and Clause 6.104 covers removable parts, interchangeability, and the conditions for using removable parts as part of the isolating function. In practice, these rules control the operating sequence and reduce the chance of an incorrect switching action.

Internal arc, compartment design, and cable testing

Clause 6.106 introduces internal arc classification (IAC). If an assembly is assigned an IAC, it must be designed to protect persons under internal arc conditions in normal operating conditions, and the IAC designation must appear on the nameplate. Annex A then gives the room simulation, indicators, and test arrangement used to verify that classification. For the user, IAC is the declared protection level for arc fault scenarios, not a generic safety claim.

Clause 6.103 and Clause 6.104 distinguish high-voltage compartments, fluid-filled compartments, partitions, shutters, and removable parts. Clause 6.105 allows the assembly to be designed for cable testing while the cables remain connected, provided the cable-test voltages are assigned and the live parts that stay energized during testing are treated accordingly. This is important when the equipment will be used with connected cable testing at site.

Type tests and routine tests

Clause 7 defines the type test programme, including dielectric tests, partial discharge tests, continuous current tests, short-time and peak withstand tests, protection verification, tightness tests, EMC tests, mechanical operation tests, pressure withstand tests, internal arc tests, thermal stability tests, and the humidity test. Clause 8 defines the routine tests for each manufactured unit, including dielectric, auxiliary circuit, resistance, tightness, design and visual checks, partial discharge measurement, mechanical operation, pressure, site tests, and fluid-condition checks after filling on site. For a manufacturer, this is the core proof that the design works and that each delivered assembly matches it.

Clause 7.105 and Annex A cover the internal arc test, while Annex B covers partial discharge measurement and Annex D covers the humidity test. Clause 7.106 gives a thermal stability test for designs where solid insulation is the main insulating medium. These methods matter because they verify the specific weak points of solid-insulation enclosed assemblies: insulation integrity, surface performance in damp conditions, and behaviour under arc energy.

What terms does EN IEC 62271-201:2026 define?

  • solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear assembly - an assembly with an external solid insulating enclosure that is completely assembled except for external connections.
  • functional unit - the part of an assembly that combines main circuits, earthing circuit, and auxiliary circuits to perform one function.
  • loss of service continuity category (LSC) - the category that shows whether other compartments or functional units can remain energized when one accessible compartment is opened.
  • internal arc classification (IAC) - the declared protection level for persons if an internal arc occurs, including arc fault current, duration, accessibility type, and classified sides.
  • protection category PA - a protection arrangement for the solid insulating enclosure that provides a defined basic level of protection against electric shock.
  • protection categories PB1 and PB2 - higher protection arrangements, with PB2 relying on a conductive layer that has its own resistance requirement.
  • relative pressure - pressure referenced to local atmospheric pressure, used when defining filling levels and functional levels.
  • disruptive discharge - insulation failure that bridges the insulation under test and collapses the voltage between electrodes.

Who uses EN IEC 62271-201:2026?

EN IEC 62271-201:2026 is used by switchgear manufacturers, assembly designers, component suppliers, type-test laboratories, utilities, industrial plant owners, and procurement teams. They use it to choose ratings, define compartment accessibility, specify LSC and IAC, plan dielectric and partial discharge tests, verify mechanical interlocking, and set installation and maintenance instructions. It is also relevant for inspectors and maintenance teams who need to check nameplate data, site tests, and post-installation condition.

What changed in EN IEC 62271-201:2026 from the previous edition?

EN IEC 62271-201:2026 supersedes EN 62271-201:2014 and all of its amendments and corrigenda. The CENELEC foreword states that the text of IEC 62271-201:2026 was adopted without modification.
