Overview

FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026/FprAA:2026 is a European Standard developed by CLC to address the safety of electric deep fat fryers, frying pans, woks, and similar appliances. These appliances are intended for household and similar use and are designed for operation at a rated voltage of not more than 250 V. The standard applies to devices using up to 5 liters of oil for cooking and aims to minimize hazards and promote safe use in domestic environments, as well as similar settings like shops, hotels, and guest accommodations.

This draft amendment aligns with the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU, providing a presumption of conformity with essential safety requirements when correctly implemented.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
The standard applies to electrical appliances such as deep fat fryers, frying pans, and woks that use oil for cooking, are intended for home or similar environments, and do not exceed 250 V or 5 liters of oil capacity.

  • User and Environmental Safety
It addresses foreseeable hazards for all users, including children and individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities.
The standard specifies that these appliances should not be controlled remotely or have a delayed start timer, thereby reducing risk of unintended operation.

  • Marking and Instructions
Appliances must bear clear and visible warnings (e.g., "Caution. Hot surface") on the hottest accessible part during normal operation. The warning symbol height and the lettering size are strictly defined for optimal visibility and user comprehension.

Instructions must include clear usage restrictions:

    • Not for use by children under 8 years old without supervision.
    • Cleaning and maintenance must not be performed by children.
    • Appliances should be placed stably, with handles positioned to avoid spills.
  • Construction Requirements
Ensures appliances are designed without certain features, such as remote control or delayed timers, to minimize safety risks relating to unintended operation.
Resistance to rusting requirements from the general standard are not applicable to these appliances.

  • Reference to Legislative Requirements
By following this standard, manufacturers can demonstrate compliance with key EU directives related to electrical safety and radio equipment where applicable.

Applications

Electrical deep fat fryers, frying pans, and similar kitchen appliances falling under this standard are commonly used in:

  • Private homes or apartments
  • Small commercial environments such as shops, hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, or farmhouse kitchens
  • Other residential environments where non-expert users may operate appliances

The standard is crucial for manufacturers, importers, and distributors seeking to ensure that their kitchen appliances meet European safety regulations, thereby facilitating market access within the EU and EFTA countries.

Related Standards

This standard should be used in conjunction with:

  • EN IEC 60335-1:2023 – General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances
  • EN IEC 60335-2-37 – Particular requirements for commercial electric fryers
  • EN IEC 60335-2-39 – Particular requirements for electrically operated kitchen machines

It also aligns its requirements to support compliance with:

  • Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive)
  • Directive 2014/53/EU (Radio Equipment Directive)

By adhering to FprEN IEC 60335-2-13:2026/FprAA:2026, stakeholders can ensure improved household appliance safety, clear end-user instructions, and conformity to EU legislation for small cooking appliances.
