Overview
EN 60719:1993 is a European Standard published by CLC (CENELEC) that specifies a standardized calculation method to determine the lower and upper limits for the average outer dimensions of cables with circular copper conductors, rated up to and including 450/750 V. This standard covers both the average outer diameter of circular cables and the outer dimensions of flat cords within the specified voltage range.
The standard is designed to ensure consistency and compatibility in the cable industry by providing clear guidelines for dimension calculation. These calculations are crucial for manufacturing quality control, verifying compliance with relevant specifications, and ensuring interoperability between cable products used throughout Europe and other regions.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
- Applies to cables with circular copper conductors.
- Relevant for cables and flat cords rated at voltages up to and including 450/750 V.
- Excludes mineral-insulated cables.
Calculation Method
- Provides a systematic approach to calculate the lower (Dmin) and upper (Dmax) limits of average outer diameters for cables.
- Details mathematical procedures involving:
- Conductor diameter selection from reference tables,
- Addition of insulation and sheath thicknesses,
- Use of assembly coefficients based on the number of cores.
Mandatory Coverings
- Specifies values for thicknesses of insulation, sheaths, and mandatory coverings such as textile or metal braids, which contribute to the overall dimensions.
Rounding Rules
- Describes procedures for rounding calculated dimensions to ensure consistent reporting across the industry.
Applications
EN 60719:1993 is essential for professionals involved in the design, manufacturing, and quality assurance of low-voltage cables. Its applications include:
Cable Manufacturing
Manufacturers use this standard to determine acceptable dimensional ranges when producing cables. This enables consistency in product sizing, ensuring cables fit prescribed installation spaces and connectors.Product Compliance and Quality Control
Testing laboratories and quality assurance teams reference this standard to verify whether cables conform to declared specifications for outer dimensions, which is critical for meeting regulatory, safety, and performance requirements.Standards Development and Procurement
Cable specifications in regional and national standards, as well as in procurement documents for construction and infrastructure projects, frequently refer to EN 60719 to ensure product compatibility and interchangeability.Installation and System Integration
Installers and system designers rely on the outer dimension calculations to plan installations, manage cable management systems, and predict cable tray fill rates.

1.1 Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for calculation of the lower and upper limits
for the average outer diameter of cables and the outer dimensions of flat cords with
circular copper conductors and of rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V.
This standard is not applicable to mineral insulated cables. The method shall not be used
to calculate the diameter over the core assembly for determining the sheath thickness; the
method given in Appendix A of IEC 502 shall be used for this purpose.
NOTES
1 It is stressed that the conductor diameters given in the tables are intended only for use in this standard
as a basis for calculation and are not intended for verification by measurement.
2 The factors given in 2.5 and 3.1 of this standard may be varied in preparing standards for cables in
which the number of cores, the hardness of the insulation, precise positioning of the conductors or other
factors may affect the dimensional tolerances permissible.
