Signalling on low-voltage electrical installations in the frequency range 3 kHz to 148,5 kHz - Part 4-4: Low voltage decoupling filter - Impedance filter
This document applies to impedance filters in a mains communication system, intended for utility networks or household and similar fixed installation including residential, commercial and light industrial buildings. These filters are used to set a suitable impedance, in the nominal frequency range of the mains signalling system, at any point of the low voltage mains network where a low impedance equipment is connected, as shown in Figure 1, in order to allow reliable operation of the mains signalling system. Impedance filters can be used either in utility or consumer networks. They can also be used in conjunction with incoming filters and segmentation filters.
[Figure 1 - Application des filtres d'impédance]

Overview
EN 50065-4-4:2023 is a European Standard developed by CLC (CENELEC) that specifies requirements for impedance filters, also known as low voltage decoupling filters, used in mains communication systems. This standard covers the operation of these filters within the frequency range of 3 kHz to 148.5 kHz in low-voltage electrical installations. It ensures that impedance filters provide the necessary electrical characteristics to support reliable power line communication (PLC) in utility, residential, commercial, and light industrial environments.
By addressing the role of impedance filters in managing signal integrity where low impedance equipment might otherwise disrupt signalling on mains networks, the standard promotes robust, interference-free operation of power line signalling systems.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose:
EN 50065-4-4:2023 applies to impedance filters designed for fixed electrical installations, including utility networks and buildings of all types. Its main objective is to set and maintain suitable impedance in power line communication systems, facilitating consistent signal transmission.Electrical Characteristics:
- Operating frequency range: 3 kHz to 148.5 kHz
- Network port: Minimum impedance modulus value of 20 Ω in the operating frequency range
- Equipment port: No specific impedance requirement
- Designed for installation where low impedance equipment is present
System Compatibility:
Impedance filters can be integrated with other types of filters such as incoming filters and segmentation filters to optimize the performance of power line networks.EMC and Safety Requirements:
The standard references additional requirements from EN 50065 series documents related to immunity (EMC) and safety, ensuring compliance with essential health and safety regulations.
Applications
Utility Networks:
Utility providers can use impedance filters to maintain the correct operating conditions for power line communication infrastructure, especially at connection points with diverse or unpredictable loads.Residential and Commercial Installations:
These filters are vital in homes, offices, and commercial buildings where low impedance devices, such as appliances and specialty equipment, may otherwise degrade PLC performance.Light Industrial Environments:
Impedance filters protect communication signals in industrial facilities with varying electrical loads, supporting reliable automation, remote monitoring, and energy management.Integration with Other Devices:
Used alongside incoming filters, segmentation filters, and phase couplers, impedance filters are part of a holistic strategy for maintaining optimal network conditions on low-voltage electrical installations.
Related Standards
To ensure compatibility and comprehensive coverage, EN 50065-4-4:2023 should be used in conjunction with related standards, including:
- EN 50065-1: General requirements, frequency bands, and disturbances for signalling on low-voltage networks
- EN 50065-2-1, 2-2, and 2-3: Immunity requirements for mains communications equipment in various environments (residential, commercial, and industrial)
- EN 50065-4-1: Generic specification for low voltage decoupling filters

- EN 50065-4-3: Requirements for incoming filters
- EN 50065-4-5: Segmentation filters used in PLC systems
- EN 50065-4-7: Portable low voltage decoupling filters
Practical Value
By following EN 50065-4-4:2023, manufacturers, installers, and utility providers can ensure stable communication over low-voltage networks, increase system reliability, and reduce signal disturbances caused by low impedance equipment. Adherence to this standard facilitates interoperability, safety compliance, and optimal network performance for modern power line communication systems.
