Overview
IEC 60745-2-11:2003+AMD1:2008 CSV, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifies safety requirements for hand-held motor-operated or magnetically driven reciprocating saws. This standard covers tools such as jigsaws and sabre saws (also known as reciprocating saws) with rated voltages not exceeding 250 V for single-phase a.c. or d.c., and 440 V for three-phase a.c.
By integrating both the 2003 edition and its 2008 amendment, IEC 60745-2-11 provides comprehensive guidance for manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and safety compliance professionals involved in the design, production, and assessment of reciprocating saws. The requirements are part of a modular safety standard series aimed at ensuring uniformity in the global market for electric power tools.
Key Topics
- Safety Requirements: Addresses particular hazards associated with reciprocating saws, such as blade contact and electrical risks.
- Definitions: Clarifies terms such as "reciprocating saw," "jigsaw," and "sabre saw" to ensure consistent application and understanding.
- Test Methods: Specifies procedures to verify safety features, especially regarding protection against accidental blade contact.
- Marking and Instructions: Covers labeling and user instructions, including warnings about risks from exposure to live wiring during use.
- Mechanical Hazards: Includes requirements for guards and barriers to minimize unintentional contact with cutting edges.
- Conformance: Stipulates conditions for testing and verification, referencing IEC 60745-1 for general requirements.
Applications
IEC 60745-2-11 is essential for organizations involved in:
- Manufacturing: Assists tool manufacturers in designing safer electric reciprocating saws for both professional and DIY use.
- Product Testing and Certification: Supports testing laboratories and certification bodies in evaluating compliance of power tools with international standards.
- Procurement: Enables purchasers, retailers, and distributors to ensure that the hand-held power tools they source or sell meet recognized safety regulations.
- Occupational Safety: Provides guidance for workplace safety officers and end-users to select and use reciprocating saws that comply with international safety requirements.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps manufacturers and importers fulfill market entry requirements by meeting harmonized international safety standards.
Related Standards
IEC 60745-2-11 is part of the IEC 60745 series, which provides safety standards for diverse categories of hand-held motor-operated electric tools. Related standards include:
- IEC 60745-1: General requirements for hand-held motor-operated electric tools.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.

patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 60745-2-11 has been prepared by subcommittee 61F: Safety of
hand-held motor-operated electric tools, of IEC technical committee 61: Safety of household
and similar electrical appliances
Main changes include Clause 3: Definitions, introducing detailed definitions for the tools in the
scope of this part 2, and Clause 19: Mechanical hazards, introducing requirements for
guarding the saw blades. Subclause 2.2.23 has been removed, as the definitions of “normal
load” are now generally covered by Part 1.
This consolidated version of IEC 60745-2-11 consists of the second edition (2003)

towards the saw blade, it shall not be able to touch its toothed edge.
b) For other types of reciprocating saws
If a reciprocating saw is designed with a grip zone adjacent and behind the reciprocating saw
blade, a barrier shall be provided to prevent inadvertent contact with the saw blade. The
barrier shall have a minimum height of 6 mm as measured from the grip surface and be
located between the grip zone and the saw blade. A barrier is not required if the tool is
