Overview
ISO 7088:1981 - Fish‑meal - Vocabulary is a bilingual (English/French) International Standard that defines the basic terminology used in the fish‑meal (fishmeal) industry. First published on 1 October 1981 and developed by ISO/TC 169 (Fish‑meal), the document provides clear, harmonized definitions for product types, process streams and safety-related terms used across production, trade and regulation of fish‑meal.
Key topics
The standard focuses on concise, authoritative definitions rather than prescriptive limits or test methods. Important entries covered include:
- Fish‑meal / Farine de poisson - product obtained by drying (and, where necessary, fat removal) and grinding whole fish or parts of fish.
- Scrap / Farine de poisson non broyée - dried whole fish or parts that have not been ground.
- Lean fish‑meal / Farine de poisson maigre and Solvent‑extracted fish‑meal / Farine de poisson dégraissée - distinctions based on source species and fat extraction.
- Press liquor, stick water, fish solubles - process liquids separated from cooked fish and their concentrated forms.
- Press‑cake fish‑meal - fish‑meal without added fish solubles.
- Pelletized fish‑meal - fish‑meal compressed into pellets.
- Spontaneous heating / Autocombustion and stabilized fish‑meal / procédé de stabilisation - terms addressing self‑heating, oxidation control, and prevention of autocombustion.
- Antioxidant, caking and other handling/quality terms that relate to storage stability and product integrity.
Note: the standard provides both English and French equivalents but does not include an alphabetical index of the French terms.
Applications
ISO 7088:1981 is primarily a reference vocabulary for stakeholders who require consistent terminology when producing, trading, regulating, testing or documenting fish‑meal. Typical users include:
- Fish‑meal producers and processors for internal specifications and labeling.
- Feed manufacturers and formulators referencing product types (press‑cake, pelletized, solvent‑extracted).
- Quality control and laboratory personnel documenting processes and test results.
- Storage, transport and safety managers addressing risks such as spontaneous heating and caking.
- Regulators, contracts specialists and commodity traders using standardized terms in specifications and contracts.
- Translators, technical writers and standardization committees needing bilingual, standardized terminology.
Related standards
ISO 7088 is a vocabulary standard and complements technical standards and methods for sampling, chemical analysis, safety, animal feed composition and storage practices. Users should consult applicable production, laboratory and safety standards in their jurisdiction for prescriptive requirements.

Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
