Overview
EN 60335-1:2002/A13:2008 is Amendment A13 to the European safety standard EN 60335-1:2002 - Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 1: General requirements. Approved by CENELEC on 1 October 2008, this amendment updates general safety requirements and normative references that apply across a wide range of domestic electrical appliances. Member bodies were required to implement the amendment at national level by 1 July 2009.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to the general requirements for safety of household and similar electrical appliances (the overarching Part 1 document used with appliance-specific parts).
- Telecommunication interfaces: Clause 24.1.7 is replaced to clarify that when an appliance is remotely operated via a telecommunication network, the appliance’s telecommunication interface circuitry must comply with the relevant telecommunication standards - specifically EN 41003 and EN 60950-1:2006 (Subclause 6.3).
- Normative references (Annex ZC):
- The amendment removes the previous reference to IEC 62151.
- It adds references to standards for equipment connected to telecommunication networks (EN 41003) and to information technology equipment safety (IEC 60950-1 / EN 60950-1:2006).
- Regulatory process and status: Amendment A13 modifies EN 60335-1:2002 and is binding on CENELEC members; versions are available in English, French and German with translations notified by national committees having equivalent status.
Practical applications
- Manufacturers and designers of household appliances need this amendment to ensure product designs that incorporate remote-control or networked functionality meet required safety interfaces.
- Compliance and certification bodies use the amendment to define test criteria and to assess conformity of appliances that include telecommunication circuitry.
- Test laboratories reference the updated normative citations when verifying insulation, EMC interfaces and safety of network-connected control circuits.
- Regulators and standards managers rely on the amendment when harmonizing national standards and withdrawing conflicting national rules.
