This International Standard describes a procedure for the calculation of the cetane index of middle-distillate fuels from petroleum-derived sources. The calculated value is termed the "cetane index by four-variable equation". Throughout the remaining text of this International Standard, the term "cetane index" implies cetane index by four-variable equation. This International Standard is not applicable to fuels containing additives for raising the cetane number, nor to pure hydrocarbons, nor to distillate fuels derived from coal. It is applicable to fuels containing non-petroleum derivatives from tar sand and oil shale.

Diese Internationale Norm beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Berechnung des Cetanindex von Kraftstoffen aus Mitteldestillaten auf Mineralölbasis. Der berechnete Wert wird im Folgenden „Cetanindex aus der 4 Parameter Gleichung“ bezeichnet. Im weiteren Text dieser Norm wird der Begriff „Cetanindex“ als Abkürzung für „Cetanindex aus der 4 Parameter Gleichung“ verwendet.
Diese Internationale Norm ist weder anwendbar auf Kraft und Brennstoffe, die Additive zur Erhöhung der Cetanzahl enthalten, noch auf reine Kohlenwasserstoffe, noch auf Destillate auf Kohlebasis. Sie ist anwendbar auf Kraft und Brennstoffe, die Komponenten enthalten, die nicht aus Rohöl, sondern aus Teersand und Schieferöl gewonnen werden.
ANMERKUNG 1 Diese Internationale Norm wurde ursprünglich entwickelt unter Verwendung einer Matrix von Kraft und Brennstoffen, von denen einige Komponenten enthielten, die nicht aus Rohöl, sondern aus Teersand und Schieferöl gewonnen wurden. Inzwischen sind andere Gleichungen zur Berechnung des Cetanindex entwickelt worden, die auf Produkte, die aus Teersand gewonnen werden, besser anwendbar sind.
ANMERKUNG 2 Der Cetanindex ist keine alternative Art, die Cetanzahl auszudrücken; er ist ein zusätzliches Hilfsmittel, welches unter Berücksichtigung seiner Einschränkungen zu benutzen ist.
ANMERKUNG 3 Der Cetanindex wird zur Schätzung der Cetanzahl von Dieselkraftstoff verwendet, wenn ein Prüfmotor zur direkten Bestimmung dieser Eigenschaft nicht verfügbar ist, oder wenn für eine motorische Prüfung keine ausreichen¬de Probenmenge vorhanden ist. In Fällen, wo die Cetanzahl eines Kraftstoffes vorher festgestellt worden ist, darf der Cetanindex zur Überprüfung der Cetanzahl nachfolgender Proben dieses Kraftstoffes verwendet werden, vorausgesetzt, dass die Herkunft des Kraftstoffes und die Art der Herstellung unverändert geblieben sind.

L'ISO 4264:2007 décrit une méthode de calcul de l'indice de cétane des distillats moyens de différentes provenances pétrolières. La valeur obtenue est appelée indice de cétane calculé par équation à quatre variables. Tout au long du texte de l'ISO 4264:2007, le terme «indice de cétane» est employé pour désigner l'indice de cétane calculé par équation à quatre variables.
L'ISO 4264:2007 n'est pas applicable aux combustibles contenant des additifs destinés à améliorer l'indice de cétane, ni aux hydrocarbures purs, ni aux distillats issus de la houille. Elle est applicable aux combustibles contenant des produits non pétroliers dérivés des schistes bitumeux ou des sables bitumeux.

Ta mednarodni standard opisuje postopek za izračun cetanskega indeksa srednjih destilatov iz virov, pridobljenih iz nafte. Izračunana vrednost se imenuje »cetanski indeks po enačbi s štirimi spremenljivkami«. V nadaljevanju besedila tega mednarodnega standarda izraz »cetanski indeks« pomeni cetanski indeks po enačbi s štirimi spremenljivkami. Ta mednarodni standard se ne uporablja za goriva z aditivi za večanje cetanskega števila ali za čiste ogljikovodike ali za destilatna goriva, pridobljena iz premoga. Uporablja se za goriva z nenaftnimi derivati iz katranskega peska in naftnega skrilavca.

This document (EN ISO 4264:2007) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 28 "Petroleum
products and lubricants" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 19 “Gaseous and liquid fuels,
lubricants and related products of petroleum, synthetic and biological origin” the secretariat of which is held by
NEN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by February 2008, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by February 2008.
This document supersedes EN ISO 4264:1996.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the following
countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
