oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026 is the Slovene adoption of IEC 60704-2-6, a Committee Draft for Vote (CDV) prepared by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It specifies a test code for determining airborne acoustical noise from household and similar tumble dryers, so laboratories and manufacturers can measure and compare sound emission under defined conditions.
It is intended for people who test, declare, verify, or document noise levels for these appliances, including electric and gas-fired tumble dryers.
What does oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026 sets particular requirements for measuring airborne acoustical noise from tumble dryers. It is used together with IEC 60704-1:2021, and it supplements or modifies the general test code where tumble dryers need their own setup, load, and operating conditions.
The scope covers single unit electric tumble dryers for household and similar use, including appliances intended for floor placement against a wall, building-in, under-counter or under-worktop installation, wall-mounting, or counter placement. It also applies to gas-fired tumble dryers. A note points users of washer-dryers to IEC 60704-2-16:2019, and another note points to IEC 60704-3:2019 for determining and verifying declared noise values.
The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, measurement methods and acoustical environments, operation and location of appliances under test, sound pressure level measurement, information to be recorded, and information to be reported. It also lists a normative Annex A titled Standard test table.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026?
Measurement methods and uncertainty
oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026 allows the direct method and the comparison method for noise measurement. If audible discrete tones are present, additional microphone positions or source positions may be needed, which matters because tonal noise can change the measured spread between runs.
The document states that ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2, and ISO 3744 can be used for tumble dryer noise measurements. For ISO 3743-1 and ISO 3743-2, the appliance size has to fit the limits of those methods, so the test lab must match the room method to the dryer size.
Clause 4.5 uses tables for measurement uncertainty and for declaration and verification work under IEC 60704-3. In practice, these tables tell a manufacturer or lab how much variation to expect and what uncertainty basis to use when reporting or checking declared noise values.
Appliance preparation, exhaust, and operating conditions
Before each noise test, filters, heat exchangers, and ducts named as consumer service items in the instructions have to be cleaned. This matters because dirt or blockage can alter the sound of the dryer and make results less repeatable.
If the dryer can be connected to an exhaust device, Clause 6.1.1 requires the standard exhaust shown in Figure 101. The exhaust uses a rigid pipe and muffler arrangement, and Table 101 gives the minimum muffler insertion loss, so the exhaust itself does not become a noise source or add extra pressure drop.
Clause 6.1.3 requires the dryer to be run for at least two complete cycles in the standard test programme before noise measurements. Clause 6.1.4 requires conditioning at ambient temperature for at least four hours before the test, which helps stabilize the appliance.
For gas-fired tumble dryers, Clause 6.2.4 requires operation at reference pressure with the appropriate reference gas from the appliance category. Clause 6.3 requires the climatic conditions to be maintained for the full duration of the standard test programme.
Load preparation and test run
Clause 6.4.2 requires tumble dryers to be operated in the cotton programme used for the performance measurement, with the standard test load from Clause 6.101. If no performance test programme applies, the noise test uses a cotton programme until the final moisture content reaches the specified target. For the reader, this means the load state and end point are controlled, not left to operator judgement.
Clause 6.101 defines the standard test load as cotton towels, with rules for rated capacity, pre-treatment, intermediate treatment, and conditioning. This is important because the load age and moisture content affect both drying behaviour and noise.
Clause 7.4.1 requires the A-weighted sound pressure level to be time-averaged over the full standard test programme. In practice, the reported value represents the whole drying run, not just one moment in the cycle.
What terms does oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026 define?
- Tumble dryer - an appliance that dries textiles by tumbling them in a rotating drum while air passes through the drum.
- Rated capacity - the maximum mass of dry textiles, in kg, that the manufacturer declares for a selected programme.
- Cotton towels - towels belonging to the cotton base load defined in IEC 60456.
- Standard test load - a batch of textile load consisting only of a specific number of cotton towels.
Who uses oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026?
Manufacturers of tumble dryers use this standard to set up noise tests and to support product specifications. Test laboratories use it to measure airborne acoustical noise under repeatable conditions. Quality managers and buyers use it when they need a common basis for comparing models, checking declared noise values, or reviewing test reports. It is also relevant to conformity assessment and certification work for household laundry appliances.
What changed in oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026 from the previous edition?
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2012 and is described as a technical revision. The stated significant changes are alignment to IEC 60704-1:2021, exclusion of washer dryers, treatment of the test load aligned to IEC 60704-2-4:2025, and a changed distance to the vertical wall.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026?
- IEC 60704-1:2021 - the general requirements part that this document supplements and modifies.
- IEC 60704-3:2019 - used for determining and verifying declared noise emission values.
- IEC 61121 - provides tumble dryer performance measurement methods and the basis for rated capacity when it is not declared.
- IEC 60456:2024 - provides the cotton base load and detergent-related methods used for towel conditioning and intermediate treatment.
- ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2, ISO 3744 - acoustic measurement methods that can be used for tumble dryers.
- ISO 7235 - used for the insertion loss measurement of the muffler in the standard exhaust.
- IEC 60704-2-16:2019 and IEC 60704-2-4:2025 - cited in notes for washer-dryers and for aligned test load treatment.
What does the oSIST prEN IEC 60704-2-6:2026 document contain?
The document contains the test structure for tumble dryer noise measurement, including the selected measurement methods, acoustical environments, appliance preparation, loading, mounting, and reporting items. It includes Figure 101 for the standard exhaust and Table 101 for muffler insertion loss, both used to control the influence of the exhaust system on the measured sound.
It also contains Table 1 and Table 2 for standard deviations used in repeatability, reproducibility, declaration, and verification work. Clause 6.101 gives the standard test load procedure, including pre-treatment, intermediate treatment, conditioning, and age control of cotton towels.
