Overview

SIST EN 1870-14:2008/kprA1:2009 is an important European amendment standard focused on the safety of woodworking machines, specifically vertical panel sawing machines which are a type of circular sawing machine. Developed and maintained by the CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 142, this document provides comprehensive safety requirements to enhance operator protection and machine reliability. This type 2 amendment updates the original 2007 standard, including modifications to hazard identification, ergonomics, machine marking, and instructional requirements. It supports conformity with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, ensuring regulatory compliance across European Union and EFTA member states.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: The standard applies specifically to vertical panel sawing machines, ensuring safety in design, manufacture, and user operation.
  • Significant Hazards: Updates to hazard lists integrate risk sources linked to machine handling, tool contact, mechanical breakdown, and ergonomic factors.
  • Ergonomics and Handling: The amendment mandates provisions for handling heavy machine components exceeding 25 kg, including attachments for lifting devices to prevent accidents during transport and assembly.
  • Machine Marking Requirements:
    • Clear identification of manufacturer/business details.
    • Year of construction labeling to mark completion.
    • Precise designation of machine type and series for traceability.
  • Instruction Handbook Content Updates:
    • Enhanced safety precautions on machine setting and operation.
    • Instructions on emergency procedures and blockage handling.
    • Guidelines for safe transport, assembly, dismantling, and disposal.
    • Specification of safety-impacting spare parts.
  • Harmonization with EU Directives: Integration of Annexes ZA and ZB details the standard’s role in conforming to the New Approach Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, facilitating legal compliance.
  • Safety Distances and Signals: Incorporation of updated normative references such as EN ISO 13857:2008 and EN 61310-1:2008 ensures modern requirements for safe distances and signaling systems.

Applications

SIST EN 1870-14:2008/kprA1:2009 is essential for manufacturers, importers, and operators of vertical panel sawing machines used in woodworking industries. Its practical applications include:

  • Machine Design and Manufacturing: Ensures production of equipment featuring robust safety guards, ergonomic design, reliable control systems, and accurate marking.
  • Workplace Safety: Protects machine operators by prescribing safety zones, emergency controls, and operational instructions to minimize risks from moving parts and mechanical failures.
  • Transport and Maintenance: Provides guidelines on the safe handling of heavy components to prevent workplace injuries during relocation or servicing of machinery.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Aligns machinery with EU safety and operational directives, enabling manufacturers to meet legal requirements for market access in Europe.
  • User Training & Documentation: Supports proper operator training with comprehensive handbooks covering safe operation, maintenance, and incident response practices.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 13857:2008 – Safety distances to prevent hazard zones being reached by upper and lower limbs, ensuring operator protection near moving parts.
  • EN 61310-1:2008 – Requirements for visual, acoustic, and tactile signals on machinery, facilitating effective hazard communication.
  • EN 1870-1 & EN 1870-2 – Other parts of the EN 1870 series covering general circular sawing machines and safety requirements.
  • Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC – European legislation regulating machinery safety standards and conformity.

By complying with SIST EN 1870-14:2008/kprA1:2009, stakeholders in the woodworking sector can enhance safety, reduce accident risks, and fulfill European regulatory obligations for vertical panel sawing machines. This amendment supports safer, more ergonomic, and clearly documented machinery operation in line with the latest safety technologies and EU directives.
