Overview
SIST EN 15182-3:2019 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for hand-held branchpipes used in fire service operations. These branchpipes are designed for projecting extinguishing agents supplied by firefighting pumps, specifically those with a smooth bore jet or a fixed spray jet angle under nominal pressure PN 16 (16 bar, 1.6 MPa). The standard applies to branchpipes with a maximum flow rate up to 1000 liters per minute at a reference pressure of 6 bar.
This document is an essential reference for manufacturers, testing bodies, and fire services, ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of branchpipes used in firefighting. It complements the general requirements established in EN 15182-1:2019 and focuses on specific performance, safety, and testing criteria for these equipment types.
Key Topics
Safety Requirements
EN 15182-3 emphasizes critical safety warnings:- Branchpipes with spray angles less than 30° provide inadequate protection for firefighters and must not be used for high-risk operations such as internal fire attacks.
- Their use near or on electrical installations is restricted without explicit written authorization from the manufacturer, including safety distance guidelines.
Performance Requirements
The standard defines clear mechanical, hydraulic, and operational performance criteria, including:- Maximum dimensions and mass limits to ensure maneuverability.
- Torque limitations for operating elements such as levers and valve handles to allow safe, easy handling without excessive force.
- Spray jet characteristics, mandating a minimum spray angle of 15° for fixed spray jets, and specifying flow rate accuracy with permissible deviations.
- Minimum effective throw distance requirements, ensuring the branchpipe delivers water streams effectively at specified flow rates.
Test Methods
EN 15182-3 sets detailed testing protocols to verify compliance with requirements:- Leak-tightness tests under nominal and test pressures to confirm no leakage during operation.
- Hydrostatic pressure tests simulating water hammer effects up to burst pressure (60 bar) to validate structural integrity.
- Measurement of torque forces, spray angles, flow rates, and effective throw distances conducted under controlled conditions.
Mechanical Specifications
- Flow rates up to 1000 l/min and nominal pressure of 16 bar (PN 16).
- Branchpipes must adhere to dimension and mass limits for different flow rate capacities to optimize handling.
- Operating elements must maintain designated torque values and defined force ranges for components with detents to ensure durability and user safety.
Applications
SIST EN 15182-3:2019 branchpipes are critical equipment for firefighting teams engaging with portable devices connected to pumps. Their applications include:
- Outdoor firefighting operations where a fixed spray angle or smooth bore jet is sufficient for extinguishing flames at a safe distance.
- Use with fire trucks or fixed pump systems requiring reliable handheld spray tools capable of delivering extinguishing agents at high pressure.
- Environments where safety and ergonomic handling are mandatory to reduce firefighter fatigue and exposure risks.
- Situations necessitating consistent flow rates and effective water throw for efficient flame suppression without endangering personnel in proximity.
However, it is important to heed the standard’s warnings: these branchpipes are not suitable for high-risk internal firefighting attacks or operations near electrical hazards unless specifically authorized.
