SIST EN 12350-12:2010
(Main)Testing fresh concrete - Part 12: Self-compacting concrete - J-ring test
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies the procedure for determining the passing ability (measured by the blocking step), the flow spread and t500J flow time of self-compacting concrete as the concrete flows through the J-ring.
The test is not suitable when the maximum size of aggregate exceeds 40 mm.
NOTE In respect to the relationship between aggregate size and bar spacing, the test is intended to assess the passing ability of the concrete proposed with the bar spacing typically in the works. If the concrete blocks then the aggregate size could be too large for the particular application.

SIST EN 12350-12:2010 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 12350-12:2010 from CEN. It specifies the J-ring test for fresh self-compacting concrete, measuring passing ability, flow spread and t500J flow time as the concrete flows through the J-ring. It is used by people who need to assess how SCC moves around reinforcement and other tight openings in practice.
What does SIST EN 12350-12:2010 specify?
SIST EN 12350-12:2010 specifies the procedure for testing self-compacting concrete with the J-ring. The test gives three practical results: passing ability, flow spread and, when requested, t500J flow time.
The scope is limited to concrete that can be tested with this method. The standard says it is not suitable when the maximum aggregate size exceeds 40 mm. In practice, that means the method is intended for mixes whose aggregate size and the bar spacing of the J-ring are in a realistic relationship for the works.
The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, principle, apparatus, test sample, procedure, expression of results, test report, and repeatability and reproducibility, followed by a bibliography. That structure takes the user from the purpose of the test to the equipment, execution, calculation and reporting.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 12350-12:2010?
Clause 3 states that the J-ring test assesses the ability of self-compacting concrete to pass through tight openings without segregation or blocking. It is described as an alternative to the L box test in EN 12350-10, but the result is not directly comparable. For a reader, this means the test is useful for checking flow through reinforcement, not for converting one result into another test result.
Apparatus and J-ring types
Clause 4 requires apparatus in accordance with EN 12350-8, plus the J-ring and a straight edge. Two J-ring versions are described: a narrow gap J-ring and a wide gap J-ring. In practice, the choice affects how congested the simulated reinforcement is, so the selected version must match the intended application.
The cone may need its feet removed if they prevent free upward movement inside the J-ring. That detail matters because the cone must lift cleanly when the test starts.
Sampling and test preparation
Clause 5 requires the sample to be obtained in accordance with EN 12350-1. Clause 6 then describes placing the cone centrally on the baseplate, positioning the J-ring concentrically around it, filling the cone in one operation without agitation or mechanical compaction, and striking off the excess.
The cone is lifted vertically in one movement in 1 s to 3 s. If t500J is required, timing starts when the cone leaves the baseplate and stops when the concrete first reaches the 500 mm circle. In practice, this checks both flow behavior and the speed of spread.
Measurements and results
Clause 6 requires measurement of the largest flow diameter and the diameter at right angles to it. It also requires height differences between the straight edge and the concrete surface at the central position and at four positions outside the J-ring. These measurements are the basis for the passing ability result.
Clause 7 defines the reported results. Passing ability is expressed as the blocking step, flow spread is the mean of the two measured diameters, and t500J is the time to 500 mm spread. The test therefore gives one measure of obstruction through the ring, one measure of overall spread, and one measure of flow rate.
Reporting and precision
Clause 8 lists what the test report shall include, such as the sample identification, test location and time, the J-ring type used, the results, any segregation, and any deviation from the method. That helps anyone reviewing the result understand exactly how the test was run.
Clause 9 provides repeatability and reproducibility data for the narrow gap J-ring and says they were established from a multi-laboratory programme interpreted in accordance with ISO 5725-2. For users, this is the basis for judging whether measured differences are likely to be real or within expected test variation.
What terms does SIST EN 12350-12:2010 define?
- Self-compacting concrete (SCC) - concrete designed to flow and fill without vibration.
- J-ring - a ring of evenly spaced vertical smooth bars placed around the slump cone to create a passing obstacle.
- Passing ability - the ability of SCC to pass through tight openings without blocking.
- Blocking step - the height difference used to express passing ability.
- Flow spread - the average spread diameter of the concrete after the test.
- t500J flow time - the time taken for SCC to first reach a 500 mm spread.
- Narrow gap J-ring - the J-ring version with closer bar spacing, used for a more congested passage.
- Wide gap J-ring - the J-ring version with wider bar spacing.
Who uses SIST EN 12350-12:2010?
SIST EN 12350-12:2010 is used by concrete laboratories, site testers, quality control staff, and concrete producers working with SCC. It is relevant when checking whether a mix can pass reinforcement, whether a new SCC formulation behaves as intended, and whether fresh concrete results are suitable before casting in place. Engineers, quality managers and buyers use it when they need a practical workability check for SCC in concrete and related construction products.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 12350-12:2010?
- EN 12350-1 - provides the sampling method for the fresh concrete sample.
- EN 12350-8 - provides the slump-flow test method that the J-ring procedure follows in part, and the same base apparatus arrangement.
- EN 12350-10 - is the L box test referenced as an alternative method for SCC passing ability.
- ISO 5725-2 - provides the basic method used to interpret repeatability and reproducibility.
What does the SIST EN 12350-12:2010 document contain?
The document includes figures showing the J-ring arrangement, the narrow gap and wide gap versions, and the measurement positions used for the height differences. It also includes the calculation expressions for blocking step and flow spread, so users can convert the measured values into reported results.
Clause 8 gives the report content in checklist form, which is useful for lab records, site reports and conformity documentation. Clause 9 includes repeatability and reproducibility tables for the narrow gap J-ring, helping users judge test precision when comparing results between operators or laboratories.
